Exit Music - or just a temporary pause in the career of John Rebus
Ian Rankin at his most critical - Preparing to retire Inspector John Rebus (he did for 5 to 6 years) the book has the feel of a 'closing' of the career of the Detective. Possibly not the 'best' of the Ian Rankin - Rebus novels but a worthy addition to the catalogue and one that shows Rebus apparently at that end of his working life and at a crossroad.

An exit but no end
As Rebus struggles with the end of his career he struggles against villains in his past, present, future and within himself. Book after book has followed the exploits of all the characters and this one builds on the experiences of the past. Never one to adhere to procedural methods Rebus continues to defy orthodoxy to the end
