This is a fascinating merchant history of Europe and the Indonesian spice islands, centred upon Nathaniel Courthope as the hero. Lightly told by Giles Milton, the tale moves effortlessly and is educational, interesting, exciting and from time to time gruesome. Never would I have expected to know so much about the humble nutmeg or that it was once practically royal. There is a delightful twist in the tale that brings the small nutmeg island into a place in history most of us would not credit. One of my favourite books.

I bought this book as a christmas present for my dad. I couldn't resist a quick browse and was immediately hooked. It is an absolute page-turner, not exactly what I anticipated from a history book. I do find myself constantly reminded of Tom Baker's captain from Blackadder but that's no bad thing! Incredible stories and all pertinent to our modern life. I totally recommend this book (unless of course you have absolutely no interest in history, adventure, discovery, travel, society, Europe, America, Asia, The Arctic, etc, etc, etc). You could even learn stuff. Without trying!
Amazing true story, definately read it at least twice, I did and now I have bought a copy for a friend to enjoy. History, adventure , conflict , heroism , tropical shores ,what`s not to like.Oh and ninjas !!!!!!!!
