About this product

Product Information

A sweeping, six-part BBC adaptation of Sir Walter Scott's rich 1819 adventure novel chronicling the exploits of Saxon knight Wilfred of Ivanhoe following the Norman conquest. Young Ivanhoe's code of chivalry and his rivalry with the corrupt Templar Bois-Guilbert, combined with his conflicted romantic feelings for his intended Rowena and his true love Rebecca, bring him into contact with many of Great Britain's most storied characters, including Richard the Lionhearted, Robin Hood, and the Black Knight. Filmed entirely on location.

    Very Pleased

The Ivanhoe 1997 edition by the BBC is very enjoyable. I do not think there is a better movie version of the book because this edition gives the authenticity and detail it deserves in five hours. The two disk set has scene selections on each disk and the sound is compatible with home theater systems for a powerful show.

  • Ciarran Hinds great But still like Andrews version best

I purchased this because I enjoy just about anything with Ciarran HInds in it. He is good in this role and the film is more realistic than earlier versions. However, I still like the Anthony Andrews / James Mason version better because the story moves faster and is able to capture depth and emotion in just a few scenes while this Hinds version takes longer to develop and sometimes misses the heroism of the characters. Also in the Hinds version, the knight who surrenders to King Arthur is later killed! This seems to me to be out of character for the code of chivalry when a man's word was his bond.

  • Ivanhoe returns to life bigger than ever!

I have liked this version of Ivanhoe since I first saw it on VHS long ago. Wife and I like Susan lynch especially and Ciaran Hinds. They are old friends and the supporting actors and actresses are great Music, costumes, settings all convey a charming sense of medieval times in merry old England.I

  • Ivanhoe (1997): BBC Miniseries 2-Disc DVD

Excellent: acting and historical portrayal of Sir Walter Scott's book. Very good DVD movie. No nudity/sexual content scenes; fighting scenes are not gory - there is one scene towards the end - duel between Ivanhoe & Bois-Gilbert (his right eye gets slashed). No English subtitles. Audio is very good. Accents/speech are not difficult to understand. Very good buy.

  • Great miniseries, stayed up late 2 nights to watch

I'd read the book 40 years ago, and idly wondered how Sir Walter Scott's prose could possibly translate into a video production - Wow! This production was lively, compelling, and smoothly handled the multiple story lines while streamlining the story a bit for modern audiences. I was especially impressed by the way the issues of prejudice against Jews, the Catholic crusades, and the Inquisition were handled, Thought-provoking and the characters were multi-dimensional, presented in all their prejudice and ignorance along with their bravery, loyalty and other human qualities.
