About this product

Product Information

Universally popular, uncommonly loud, a pyrotechnic spectacle that inspires laughter, delight and a healthy dose of frayed nerves--what else but the firecracker These little sticks of paper and powder have captured the imagination of cultures the world over since the Chinese invented them centuries ago. As practical, chemical developments in firecracker production proceeded apace, the popular art form of label design flourished, leaving us with a remarkable visual record of the myths and cultural attitudes of the Chinese manufacturers and their markets. FIRECRACKERS explores the art form in detail, linking it to history and exploring its relevance in the various cultures that ceremonialize this peculiar bang. Includes reproductions of over 100 full-color labels, as well as tips on finding and saving firecracker art.

The book was exactly as described. I have to complement the seller on their packing job. Absolutely excellent. I'm glad the seller packed it so well as my package went on a tour of the Central United States. (No fault of the seller) USPS sent my package to Chicago then Minneapolis before it made it back to Illinois where it was delivered to me. I will definitely use antiquarian1943 again! A definitely positive experience. Thank you!

  • Why I like Ebay

I think Ebay is a really great thing to come along, instead of old time things being thrown out, filling the dumps, it puts these otherwise unwanted articles in the hands of people, who collect them, and preserve there history. Anything, from vacuum tubes, to gas powered models. These are not in great enough demand to be produced anymore. People are playing video games, instead of building with their hands, and getting outdoors. The presevation of history, is important. I must include, that a lot of things, such as BB guns, are not illegal to mail, or to own. There are thousands of people that collect these, and because of ebays over strict, California (where everythings illegal) rules, many things are not able to be traded. A loss of income for Ebay, and collectors, and future generations ...

  • Firecrackers by George Moyer, Jack Mingo, Warren Dotz

An out of print softcover, this book contains history and art of the common firecracker in a pleasent to read format. Loaded with quality color scans of original and hard to find firecracker labels from the past to more recent times, concise histories, methods of construction and how fireworks were influenced by, and in turn had influence upon popular culture. From quotes by Marco Polo, recognised as the first Westerner to see Chinese firecrackers in use, to what boys spent their coveted pocket change on during the early days of American-Chinese trade. this book is a fine item to add to the library of history buffs, art collectors and the common July Fourth pyromaniac. Large quality softbound book by Tenspeed Press. 136 pages.
