About this product

Product Information

Having been invited to spend Christmas in the country, fishing for pike, Gently finds himself hunting a completely different predator when a guest at Merely Hall, a nearby stately home, is found dead at the foot of the grand staircase on Christmas morning. At first the tragedy is assumed to be a simple accident, but Gently is not one to jump to conclusions and is soon in no doubt whatsoever that this was murder. Merely produces the finest tapestries in England but the threads that Gently must unravel in his investigation are more complex than any weaver's design, with everyone from the lord of the manor to his most lowly servant falling under suspicion. Praise for Alan Hunter's Gently books: 'It is always a pleasure to look forward to another Gently book by Alan Hunter ...' Police Review

Item was just as described (near new) and I had excellent communication with this seller. The item arrived much sooner than expected, which was a nice surprise. The only downside was the item could have been packaged better as the packaging was torn in places, exposing the the dust jacket of the book when I received it. Overall, a positive transaction.

Package arrived as would expect in good condition & promptly from when ordered all items in great condition & as or as described in the description & for a good descent price & what better recomendation for a seller who provided a standard of service expected not just in a reasonable prompt delivery, price, & also a satisfied satisfaction in the quality of the items previously supported & recommended by other customer recommendations from ebay feedback but to want to be a repeat customer.

Hunter's description of the stately home that's the scene of much of the action is so vivid I feel I've been there. And three are unexpected twists to the plot.

  • worth a pound or two......

Hunters' prose is very much of its' time. It is gentle (pardon the pun) and strolling in its form and I think you have to be a fan of this type of novel (as I am) to really enjoy it. It bears little resemblance to the TV spin off other than perhaps the rural settings and Gentlys' relaxed atitude to all things. They are not long reads and not particularly convoluted, cant remember seeing a rude word or thought in any of the Gently novels that I have read but I thorougly enjoy them for their simplicity, the lead character, the settings and the period feeling from a time when England was a nicer place to be. Buy one and try one - I think you will enjoy.........
