Very good vlue for money
I became interested in finding out as much as I could about Cecil John Rhodes after the News reports of the 'Rhodes must fall Movement' and the fuss students were making about his statues present outside Oriel College Oxford this Autumn. Part of my research was to see the B & W Rhodes Film of the 1930's starring Robert Huston and then to follow it with the BBC 8-part series - 'Rhodes', here reviewed. Whereas the first film was both, a sympathetic and very dated view, it was also charming in its reflection of the mindset of its time. The 1996 BBC version of history is a far more comprehensive view of Rhodes' life and makes the 'man' far more accessible. The scenery and atmosphere in South Africa is very well depicted, as well as the perspectives of the various cultural views. Rhodes is seen ... Rhodes is seen as a man inspired by an ideal gleaned during his one term at Oxford University. However due to illness not only could he not complete his sojourn there, but all of his subsequent activities were prescribed by the imminent threat of a shortened life. This excellent portrayal of one mans impatience to achieve his goals (to expand the British Empire, and financing this by bringing industrialisation to both an agrarian and tribal society) caused him to compromise his values with tragic results for so many. He is portrayed as a very capable individual in his youth but as he ages his proclivities lead more and more to his intolerance and isolation. This BBC film - in my opinion - brings to life in a brilliant way, the reasons why the subsequent cultural tensions that were to play themselves out in the southern continent of Africa came about. It is also a comprehensive portrait of a man of his time, whose legacy through De Beers diamond production is supporting both school and university education even today. I would thoroughly recommend this film series to anyone interested in almost 8 hours of historical reflection on the attitudes prevalent in our past, and on a biography illustrating the influence our own lives can make in our world today. This is both a romping good tale and also very good value for money. AY.
