About this product

Product Information

The Beatles' appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964 and 1965 helped catapult the band to stateside fame and fortune. Their debut performance alone was viewed by 73 million viewers. This collection compiles four full episodes containing 20 songs in total, and including other guests like Soupy Sales, Cab Calloway, and Cilla Black; and even commercial breaks. Shown in their original black and white, these episodes convey the feeling of a bygone era, while placing some of The Beatles' early appearances in a framework that shows how they eventually exploded as one of the most influential rock bands of all time. The four Beatles, with their fluffy mop-head haircuts and little black suits, look like fresh-faced kids as they stride nervously onto the stage in their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, February 9, 1964. Met by screaming, lovestruck fans--mostly teenage girls dressed in clean-cut sweaters with their hair curled and combed--The Beatles launch into a trio of carefully played songs including "All My Loving," "Till There Was You," and "She Loves You." The next two weeks, on February 16 and February 23, 1964, they reappear on the Ed Sullivan Show, each time to the same unabashed hero worship, performing hits like "Twist and Shout" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand." The last episode on this fascinating collection, September 12, 1965, shows how the band has changed after a year and a half--with longer hair, a loose and rebellious spirit, and a bolder stage presence. Through these classic television episodes, viewers of all eras can join the fab four as they begin their ascent into the musical history books, courtesy of the Ed Sullivan Show.

  • Great live performances from The Beatles and other top performing acts!

This is not only fine Ed Sullivan souvenirs with live performances of all types, rarely shown today, (including original commercials of the time which is quite different than today-short and to the point, no nonsense, no visual effects, just facts), but you get a piece of musical history with The Beatles and their true original sound and talent displayed live on stage. Although entirely in black and white which takes getting used to, the quality of the image is surprisingly outstanding with no haloes around the objects, and a clear picture throughout. I did purchase it primarily for the Beatles but Ed Sullivan was also part of my young Sunday night life and he is responsible for my love of music and performing arts in general. You cannot match live appearances of that quality of artists ...

  • A Really G-R-E-A-T Shew! =)

WOW! This is really great. The COMPLETE shows - commercials and all... all of the guests all of the lads' performances in beautiful Black & White! The first three TV shows (in successive weeks in Feb of 1964) clearly depicts the tremendous energy of the band and the audience. Ed is shown several times having a heck of a time cooling off the kids so he can bring on the rest of the guests or plug a sponsor. Paul is definitely highlighted in the first show. John makes up for it by the third show however (Twist & Shout). George plays a bit to the camera and Ringo is ... well Ringo! The 1965 shows the band a little weary - off key at times - but still fun. This is a definite YES! (or should I say Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!)

  • A BLAST FROM THE PAST

THESE ARE THE FULL SHOWS - INCLUDING THE COMMERCIALS!!! YOU GET TO SEE THE PERFORMERS THE BEATLES PUT OUT OF BUSINESS (OUCH!) THE QUALITY IS EXCELLENT.

  • Ed Sullivan Presents the Beatles: Great Stuff!

I was just a young kid in 1964 when the Beatles were first on the Ed Sullivan show. But being the youngest of five, there was plenty of excitement surrounding the show. I remember the enthusiasm of my brothers and especially my sister as we waited to see the Beatles. Seeing all the shows today in their entirety is a real treat. The commercials being included add to the flashback quality of the programs. Some of the other acts are less than stellar, the comedians by today standards are just not funny. Of course it was a different era, and it's interesting to see what was considerd top notch entertainment. After all, we're talking The Ed Sullivan Show, the pinnacle for any entertainer of the day. Being a live program there are moments that would be edited if it were pre-recorded. For ...
