About this product

Product Information

A brilliant and courageous doctor reveals, in gripping accounts of true cases, the power and limits of modern medicine. Sometimes in medicine the only way to know what is truly going on in a patient is to operate, to look inside with one's own eyes. This book is exploratory surgery on medicine itself, laying bare a science not in its idealized form but as it actually is -- complicated, perplexing, and profoundly human. Atul Gawande offers an unflinching view from the scalpel's edge, where science is ambiguous, information is limited, the stakes are high, yet decisions must be made. In dramatic and revealing stories of patients and doctors, he explores how deadly mistakes occur and why good surgeons go bad. He also shows us what happens when medicine comes up against the inexplicable: an architect with incapacitating back pain for which there is no physical cause; a young woman with nausea that won't go away; a television newscaster whose blushing is so severe that she cannot do her job. Gawande offers a richly detailed portrait of the people and the science, even as he tackles the paradoxes and imperfections inherent in caring for human lives. At once tough-minded and humane, Complications is a new kind of medical writing, nuanced and lucid, unafraid to confront the conflicts and uncertainties that lie at the heart of modern medicine, yet always alive to the possibilities of wisdom in this extraordinary endeavor. Complications is a 2002 National Book Award Finalist for Nonfiction.

Excellent! Retrostar Music is a very fair seller - they gave me a 5% discount on top of an already great price! They also communicated the status of my order quite frequently. The CD I ordered came in a box with plenty of wrapping paper to ensure it would not get beaten up in shipping. Usually sellers just send CDs in envelopes, so I was pleasantly surprised when this arrived in a box. The CD itself is in perfect condition. A+ experience! I would highly recommend this seller!

"Moneyball" is an old/new movie/DVD that I haven't seen. "Retrostar Music" as seller had some of Mr. Pitts movies & this was labelled "New", I decided to purchase it. The seller sent all I ordered with FREE shipping &discounted the price of all as well. It took less than a week - six days - for my complete order to arrive & they were all carefully packaged & arrived in two boxes. If I ever have a question regarding what else is in the seller's inventory, I always receive a very prompt reply.

  • A good holistic look at the mystique of medicine

I thought this book had many good qualities and bad. One of the aspects I liked most was the vivid portrayal of how his various experiences in medicine have shaped his [Gawande's] character. In this attempt, Gawande writes much about the various times he has been in the ER and the some of the problems that he has encountered. I found quite a number of shortfalls while Gawande tried to do so however. For one, from the title, I more or less expected a "surgeon's" view of how surgeries go wrong and the thought that go through surgeons' minds when a problem occurs. I guess you could say that I wished the book had more first person experiences. Instead, Gawande often writes about the lives of patients impacted by surgery and the troubles they experienced before and, possibly, afterwards. As a ...

  • Amazing author!

This is Dr. Gawande’s first book and you would think since it was written during his residency it wouldn’t be credible but it is. Everything he has authored since gets better and better and provides amazing insights into the world of medicine.
