Additional InformationNIGHT AND FOG represents the peak of director Alain Resnais' activities as a short-subject filmmaker. Framed as a documentary, the film is an unsettling view of life inside the Nazi concentration camps of World War II. As he would in his later features (HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR, LAST YEAR IN MARIENBAD) Resnais toys with chronology, with memory becoming present reality and vice versa at several critical junctures. Jean Cayrol, later responsible for the script of Resnais' Muriel (1962), wrote the narration for NIGHT AND FOG.
ReviewsFrancois Truffaut - Not a documentary, or an indictment, or a poem, but a meditation on the most important phenomenon of the twentieth century ... for a few hours, Nuit et brouillard wipes out the memory of all other films. It absolutely must be seen., Sight And Sound - Should not be confined to specialist distribution: the evidence it bears should be brought to the public of the world.

  • "Like" is hardly the right verb to use with this important historical document.

As it says on the cover, François called this 30-minute film: "Not a documentary, or an indictment, or a poem, but a meditation on the most important phenomenon of the twentieth century." He didn't make the film himself - that task was left to another distinguished French director, Alain Resnais, who accomplished the impossible with it. He balanced serene colour footage of the near-silent landscape at Auschwitz with throat-squeezing black and white archive clips of the poor unfortunates to whom Fate handed the short straw. It's quite shocking how quickly one can become desensitized to the sight of "living" skeletons, clothed (just about) in skin - but hardly any flesh as such. The audio commentary is in French only - but there are helpful subtitles in other languages - notably English. For this review I was asked "Is it entertaining?" and I answered in the negative. Same answer for "Are the characters engaging?" It would be a gross insult to answer "Yes" to either of those questions, but it's still a rare film you should buy and show to as many people as you can - particularly if they lean towards holocaust denial. My late father was present at the liberation of a different camp, and he was scarred for life by what he witnessed. I owe it to him to spread the knowledge of this vitally important film.
