This remarkable book allowed me to understad better Botvinnik's greatness as a chess player, although I always had, and still have, reservations as regards Botvinnik the individual (the devout, unflinching champion of the communist regime, the man who never played a blitz game in his life because chess was imbued with such seriousness for him that it would have seemed criminal, etc). Many games are masterpieces, examples of profound strategical thought topped with tactical brilliance (even though Botvinnik himself was frequently self-disparaging about his tactical abilities, which I find hard to understand). This makes for a very interesting read which captures the flavour of an era through Botvinnik's clear-sighted, no-nonsense style of writing and annotations. Highly-recommended! The book itself is of great quality, with a binding that has stood the test of time very well (it dates back to the 1960s but is in pristine condition.) Last but not least, I wish to thank the terrific seller who had me pay an incredibly cheap price for that book!Read full review
