A competent modifiied VS-840 which uses a Compact Flash drive in place of the unreliable 250Mb Zip drive. It is a pity that this otherwise excellent recorder wasn't offically upgraded by Roland with a more robust drive such as this CF arrangement. I bought my first 840 fifteen years ago and I have had to buy secondhand replacements ever since to keep my recording going. I now have five VS-840, all with broken Zip drives and an archive of 60 Zip disks that I am unable to access. This CF drive modification means that I can now continue to record with the VS-840, but now I will be able to transfer recorded music files directly onto my PC. The CF drives takes a 1GB CF card which gives over 500 minutes of recording time. Sold by 16samples in the US, even with import & postage charges it was still worth it. Read full review

I have a Module/DAW home recording studio. I use the Roland VS 1680 on the norm. The Roland VS 840 is smaller than the 1680 and I can pack it in my gig bag easily. I can easily transfer tracks between the 1680, 840 and DAW keeping my set flexible.
