Synopsis
The Bible of the Protestant Reformation Sixteenth century English Protestant scholars were determined to make the scriptures understandable to common people, so that, as William Tyndale famously put it, the boy that driveth the plough should know more of the scriptures than the educated man. However, Queen Mary s (1553 1558) persecution of her Protestant subjects caused many to flee to the continent to avoid imprisonment or execution. Geneva, Switzerland soon became a center for Protestant biblical scholarship. It was there that a group of the movement s leading lights gathered to undertake a fresh translation of the scriptures into English, beginning in 1556. Published in 1560, the Geneva Bible s popularity kept it in print until 1644 long after the advent of the Authorized Version (a.k.a. King James Version). It was an English Bible that met the needs of both clergy and laity. Perhaps the Geneva Bible s greatest contribution was its commentary, which under girded the emerging practice of sermonizing and helped foster scripture literacy. The Geneva Bible was the first to feature many innovations in the field of Bible publishing: Text printed in readable roman type; 7 pt. type Smyth sewn Division of the text into numbered verses Italic type used for words not in the original languages Marks placed over the accented syllables to aid in pronouncing proper names Extensive textual and explanatory commentary placed in the margins Words/phrases displayed at the heads of pages to promote scripture memorization Maps and woodcuts illustrating biblical scenes included Sold in a variety of sizes so many people could afford a household Bible The Geneva Bible accompanied English settlers voyaging to the new world. It is probable that the Geneva Bible came to America in 1607 and was used in the Jamestown colony. Thirteen years later the Pilgrims brought it with them on the Mayflower s perilous voyage to religious freedom. The Geneva Bible stands as a landmark in the history of English Bible translation. Hendrickson s facsimile reproduces one of the finest existing copies of the 1560 Geneva Bible. Using quality materials and crafted to last, Bible collectors and anyone interested in the history of the English Bible will treasure this volume. FAQ Q. Does the Geneva Bible come with the Apochrypha? A. Yes, like most Bibles printed before 1800, the Geneva Bible comes with the Apocrypha. Q. Will it come with a concordance using Strong s numbers? A. Hendrickson's 1560 Geneva Bible is a facsimile of an original copy of the book. Therefore it will not include modern features such as a concordance with Strong's numbers. ", The Geneva Bible accompanied English settlers voyaging to the New World. It is probable that the Geneva Bible came to America in 1607 and was used in the Jamestown colony. Geneva, Switzerland soon became a center for Protestant biblical scholarship. It was there that a group of the movement's leading lights gathered to undertake a fresh translation of the Scriptures into English: the Geneva Bible . It would have been the version John Bunyan, author of Pilgrim's Progress , would have read.

      The Breeches Bible!

I really like this "Breeches Bible." Nice to own a piece of history. It is neat to read the Apocrypha as well. There is so much detail in this Bible, you can spend a long time just reading one page. Also the fact that the first American colonists brought this version over, makes it a must have for any patriot.

    • Straight from Tisdale, Calvin, Haas and Luther

I love the Geneva Bible is because it is close to the original transcripts of the Bible. The Geneva is what the reformers wrote to get the world back to the people to assist God and his people to Exodus the Dark Ages. But I should have stuck with 1599 because that is more updates in the 1560s unless you know how to understand the language of 1560 and the writings someone will be lost but if those who buy the 1560 Geneva Bible don't know the individual would be lost but as myself I know the words so it's okay to me but I will not use it if you do not know the word of God and if anyone don't know how to read Old English. But it is a good book to having one collections!

    • Requires more than KJV : Provides more and better than KJV

Keeping in mind that this ia facsimilie reproduction of a preserved original it is a must have, in my opinion. At the very least; it gives you insight through the original interpretations of the time in the original margin space (with a new margin space for your own), as well as providing an earlier transliteration which tends to be superior to the KJV most of the time, bonus of containing the Apocrypha. There are also unique hand drawn maps, diagrams and more. It's worth it.... and at 2.25 x 7.25 x 10.5 coming in at ~4.3 lbs it definitely makes an impact.

    • Early English Bible

This facsimile of the Geneva Bible is an excellent edition of the English translation of the Bible preceding the much better known King James edition. The illustrations accompanying the text is also worth the investment. It does not take a long time to master the idioms of early English and actually that is one of its charms.

    • Good quality.

The old style English takes some getting use to reading, but is close to the King James. The quality of the book itself is great, and it also contains the Apocrypha for any of you that are interested to read that. If you want to read the Bible that the Pilgrims read this is for you.
