Useful item. However design means your bin needs to be half full before it works as the stirring prongs very long. So I do need to use garden fork for base of bin. Extra shorter prongs would improve design.

Arrived a day late but no problem. I assume the compost I have has been sitting and compressed for a while. When I stick the compost stirrer into the compressed compost the forks won't open as I turn the stirrer. Any help on how to make it work properly would be welcome.

Compromise design
When this arrived the bottom 'hands' were binding so did not open properly, this was an easy fix as I am pretty handy, but I then found that while the 'hands' would open OK if pushed into uncomposted material, if the fork was pushed down into material that had already started to compost the hands would stick to the shaft and not open thus not mixing the compost together. Not for hot bin mixing.
I had high hopes that this device would re-energise my composting. I have a hot bin, which has stopped working and I had hoped that the aerator would mix the contents enough to restart the composting process. The contents of the bin are now heavy and sticky and the legs on the tool do not open to mix the compost, so, sadly, this tool does not work for me. Maybe in a dryer, more open textured compost heap it would be successful but in my situation, it didn't work at all. However, it is sturdily made and lightweight and the delivery time was very good.I had high hopes that this device would re-energise my composting. Mostly works
Very sturdy and handles feel good quality. The only negative it that the two prongs invariably don’t come out when you lift it up. Usually only one side comes out. I have found that if you twist it on the way out you have a better chance of them working

Compost stirrer for small bins
This stirrer may work well in a small compost bin, but is not big enough for a 1.5x1.5metre bin. doesnt reach down far enough and sometimes only one of the flps stays out in order to raise more of the material to the surface

doesn't work in wet sticky compost
After tightening the lower bolt and trimming the bolt with a hacksaw, it worked OKish in dry compost. But I bought it for turning stuff in my hot compost bow where the stuff is too wet and sticky - the blades simply do not open. I have some hope that by modifying it (the hacksaw again) I will make it work .
