    A work of Art revisited.

    It was really good to see this film once again, after many years. I believe the film to be a work of art and relished the choices from Wilfred Owens story and poems. A tribute to Derek Jarman’s artistry. The film has aged well and was good quality in my view.

    Strong stuff

    Wow. I have seen maybe 5 or 6 Jarman films, and this is by far the most serious and moving of them. Strong nerves would be an asset as it includes some harrowing passages made from real archival war footage. It is highly emotional, sometimes visceral. It is a kind of classical music video - the visuals are made to fit the music, not the other way around. The music is stupendous. The extra features are very interesting and well worth watching. I've marked it as "entertaining", but it isn't entertainment in the mundane sense. It's serious art. Acting is generally good, though this is Jarman, and it has that sense of being a painting in motion. I didn't in general find myself caring much about the characters as individual people, but they are meant to exemplify I think, and I did care ...
