Thoughtful, powerful cinema.
This is no ordinary movie. Written and directed by Paul Schrader, who wrote Taxi Driver, it's the story of a minister driven to extreme measures following the death of an environmental activist. Ethan Hawke's portrayal of a man grappling with the deep questions of faith is understate and masterful. It's a slow film that places you inside the skin of his character. Amanda Seyfriend's work is also excellent, and Cedric Kyles (aka Cedric the Entertainer) has a masterful support role. This is the rare contemporary film that will make you think. Fans of good cinematography (I'm one) will appreciate the film's quietly stunning visuals, composed in the old Academy 35mm ratio. The DVD special features include a fascinating documentary about the film's making. The script has been nominated for best original screenplay by the Academy, and is well worth the win.
