Synopsis
A Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator teams up with a witty storyteller for this hilarious pirate adventure starring a little boy who joins Braid Beard's crew on a fantastic voyage. Full color., "Pirates have green teeth when they have any teeth at all. I know about pirates, because one day, when I was at the beach building a sand castle and minding my own business, a pirate ship sailed into view."So proclaims Jeremy Jacob, a boy who joins Captain Braid Beard and his crew in this witty look at the finer points of pirate life by the Caldecott Honor winning illustrator David Shannon and the storyteller Melinda Long. Jeremy learns how to say scurvy dog, sing sea chanteys, and throw food . . . but he also learns that there are no books or good night kisses on board: Pirates don t tuck. A swashbuckling adventure with fantastically silly, richly textured illustrations that suit the story to a T. ", In this New York Times bestseller illustrated by Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator David Shannon, a boy sets off on a pirate adventure--with surprising results! When Braid Beard's pirate crew invites Jeremy Jacob to join their voyage, he jumps right on board. Buried treasure, sea chanteys, pirate curses--who wouldn't go along? Soon Jeremy Jacob knows all about being a pirate. He throws his food across the table and his manners to the wind. He hollers like thunder and laughs off bedtime. It's the heave-ho, blow-the-man-down, very best time of his life. But then Jeremy Jacob finds out what pirates don't do. . . . • Great fun!

A classic which I have given to children for several years. It envisions a boy's newfound freedom from teeth brushing and vegetable eating, features adventure, buried treasure and loud burly manners-free pirate mateys kids love, but things are not really quite that easy, as he finds out. One caution - I always tell children that though Jeremy Jacob leaves the beach and his family without asking first, they should definitely NOT go off with strangers!
