About this product

Product Information

The Class 50 locomotives were built by English Electric between 1967 and 1968. Fifty examples were built, and were initially used to haul express passenger trains on the, then non-electrified, section of the West Coast Main Line between Crewe and Scotland. They were originally hired from English Electric Leasing, and were eventually purchased outright by BR around 1973.Class 50s were nicknamed Hoovers by rail enthusiasts because of the distinctive sound made by the air-filters originally fitted (these proved unreliable, and were removed during mid-life refurbishment, but the Hoover nickname stuck). Once the electrification of the line from Crewe to Glasgow was completed, the locomotives were moved to services in the south west of England, primarily on the mainline from London to Exeter, and were eventually retired from service in 1994 after being progressively replaced by the InterCity 125 High-Speed Trains (HSTs).

  • Nuts and bolts look at the class 50 Locomotives.

I have not actually read this yet but just had a quick flick ( as you do ) now having in the past had the Hayne's Manuals for Cars i had a good idea about this Book. I am a big fan of the Class 50's and i am pleased so many of them have been saved and having glanced at a few pictures in the book realised that they were taken at Laira Depot at Plymouth and these Engineers were brilliant at keeping these machines working. Looking forward too studying this nook at leisure.

  • History of the 50 more like...

I bought the Haynes 'Manual' for the Routemaster bus also. I was hoping for a bit more technical information - a bit like their automotive manuals but these one offs seem to be a general history of the brand. I was hoping for a bit more on the mechanics but I suppose that would have limited appeal. Some good pictures of the exteriors of these impressive locos - again, it would have been nice to have seen a bit more of the internals and the engine room. Still, for £7 I can't complain.

  • Class 50 fan's must get this.

This book is better than I expected. The contents are excellent with lots of photos & illustration. For me, the technical side of the locomotive workings are fascinating with great thoughtful text that doesn't bamboozle the not so technical mind (!) You too can read how to drive a hoover..me? I'm going to book a driver day now. Enjoy
