PRAISE FOR EXPOSURE "Talitha Stevenson has written a rich, deep and mesmerizing novel that simultaneously projects a sense of casual grace and of inexorability which I am tempted to say is like life itself, except of course that life is seldom lived at such an acute, Jamesian pitch of hyper-awareness, which is why we need novels. Especially novels like Exposure . Stevenson has an incredible talent; she writes like a very old soul, with an exquisitely-tuned Catholic sensitivity to sin, guilt and sexual obsession."--Jay McInerney UK PRAISE FOR EXPOSURE "A triumphant read . . . What Stevenson describes with gobsmacking accuracy is our primal fear that life will unceremoniously unravel." - The Independent "A saga of family dysfunction, rather in the manner of Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections or Justin Cartwright's The Promise of Happiness."- The Times, PRAISE FOREXPOSURE "Talitha Stevenson has written a rich, deep and mesmerizing novel that simultaneously projects a sense of casual grace and of inexorability which I am tempted to say is like life itself, except of course that life is seldom lived at such an acute, Jamesian pitch of hyper-awareness, which is why we need novels. What Stevenson describes with gobsmacking accuracy is our primal fear that life will unceremoniously unravel." - The Independent "A saga of family dysfunction, rather in the manner of Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections or Justin Cartwright's The Promise of Happiness."- The Times, Distinguished barrister Alistair Langford has never been one to throw caution to the winds. Since childhood, he has purposefully adhered to a rigid demeanor, setting about achieving his life's mission--the proper home, proper wife, proper career--with a quiet zealousness. How, then, does one explain Alistair's total abandonment of all these lofty ideals when he heedlessly has a sordid one-night stand with a defense witness in a high-profile case he's trying? The scandal, luridly exposed in Britain's infamous tabloid gossip rags, predictably destroys his career and endangers his marriage; and yet the disgrace is oddly liberating, even as it reveals shocking secrets about a past he'd worked so hard to renounce. Along with a complex subplot involving Alistair's ne'er-do-well son, whose own failed love affair sends him into paroxysms of grief and dreams of depraved retribution, Stevenson limns the depths of passion and privacy in a quietly tense cautionary tale that forces her peevish characters to cope with the fallout from their moral ambiguities. Carol HaggasCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved, Rich and psychologically astute, British author Stevenson's impressive second novel (after 2004's An Empty Room) refracts the life of an upper-middle-class English family-Alistair Langford, a prominent London lawyer; his devoted wife, Rosalind; and two grown children, Luke and Sophie-through the prism of a single, scandalous affair Alistair has with a witness in one of his cases. The event exposes the intricate web of lies that forms Alistair's life, in particular the flagrant denial of his middle-class past as he pursues success and respectability by virtue of his amazing intellect. The most intricate portrait is that of 28-year-old Luke, an advertising executive who embarks on a torrid affair with a high-strung, beautiful and self-absorbed actress, only to be emotionally devastated when she leaves him. Luke's increasingly desperate ploys to win her back are a key narrative arc, though the main story is Alistair's. A fine writer who paints her scenes with loving detail, Stevenson also depicts her characters' thoughts and insights with an acuity reminiscent of Ian McEwan's recent triumph, Saturday. The increasingly baroque plot threatens to overwhelm the novel, but this is nonetheless the work of a writer to be watched. Agent, Andrew Wylie. (Sept.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information., PRAISE FOR EXPOSURE "Class consciousness, sexual obsession, and familial issues make for queasy yet engaging bedfellows in Exposure by Talitha Stevenson . . . Stevenson writes with a careful grace, and an emotional honesty that is wise well beyond her 28 years."-- New York Post "[Exposure] confirms the young English author's uncanny flair for psychological plots. . . . With meticulous suspense, Stevenson sends her four Langfords down their seemingly doomed paths only to grant them each his or her own revelatory--and believable--happiness."-- Vogue

Synopsis
Prominent lawyer Alistair Langford has worked hard to achieve his immense ambitions, but in the course of just one evening he recklessly destroys everything. The scandal threatens his marriage and exposes a secret he has hidden his entire adult life. Meanwhile, his son Luke, who has led a privileged life but also has worked hard to achieve his own success, has fallen in love with a beautiful actress. When she suddenly leaves him, he plummets into a dangerous depression. His ideals in tatters, he seeks a kind of redemption by taking in two asylum seekers from Kosovo, whose struggles contrast starkly and poignantly with his own. A deftly plotted, highly suspenseful, and astutely observed morality tale, Exposure explores the dangerous pleasure of offering charity, the effects of deceit and shame on a rigidly complacent family, and the nature of love among family and friends., A deftly plotted, suspenseful morality tale explores the dangerous pleasure of offering charity, the effects of deceit and shame on a rigidly complacent family, and the nature of love among family and friends.

- _***s (6)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseWhen I'd originally placed this order, I had accidentally put in the wrong shipping address. However, the seller was more than helpful, and the CD arrived!! The packaging was wide open when it arrived, but luckily nothing was damaged. Additionally, there was nothing protective on the CD, so that open package made me feel kind of nervous. Otherwise, absolutely great! The customer service was awesome, and the product was as described.
- r***w (229)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseItem was lost in delivery- but after some communication, seller was understanding and provided a refund. I ordered another and had it sent elsewhere. My main issue was that it felt as if I was getting automated responses at first!! Please have humans review human inquiries!! It was painstaking explaining the situation to an A.I. who only repeats unhelpful replies. Thanks again!! Otherwise. Great price! Great seller!
- e***r (331)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseAlthough I received the incorrect book with my order (that had a title close to what I had ordered), AlibrisBooks apologized, said they could not re-send the book, and refunded my money and told me to keep the book that I had received, and either donate it or give it away, so I gave it to someone. That was very kind on their part to do that, and I would highly recommend them. Mistakes happen I get that.
