About this product

Product Information

A turn-based strategy-RPG, Kartia: The Word of Fate presents players with two disparate, yet intersecting storylines: one as the shrine warrior, Lacryma Christi; the other as Toxa Classico, an arrogant knight. Having selected a character, players embark on a journey spanning 18 chapters, each of which is preceded by pertinent dialogue and FMV scenes, the former accompanied by character portraits from Yoshitaka Amano (best known for his work on the Final Fantasy series).

The titular Kartia represents the lifeblood of the world of Rebus, as it is from this that almost anything can be created. Prior to and during each skirmish, Kartia can be used to fashion spells, equipment, and phantoms by assembling the various elements each entity requires. Everything created in the game comprises three elements, which are the most sought after throughout the game: the necessary text, proper grammar, and the Kartia on which to write it (three forms of Kartia exist, namely, Silk, Mithril, and WorldTree, each more powerful than the last).

Phantom creatures, the foot soldiers of the piece, are aligned according to Common, Doll, and Shadow types, and analogous to the simple Rock-Paper-Scissors game, each fares better or worse against a one of the others. Although expendable in battle, phantoms will, like their human counterparts, gain in experience over time and increase in power and ability. The battlefields on which players engage the enemy are susceptible to damage, and excessive spell use will scorch the land, burn trees to the ground, freeze bodies of water, and deform the terrain. Additionally, players can trade items with a friend or compete in two-player versus competition using their save data from the single-player adventure.

  • Have you played Kartia today?

When you start in Kartia, you will have a chose to play as the daughter of a high priest or you can play as a free knight searching for a purpose. Both characters will have unique stories and endings which will make the game twice a long, as well as fun. However, there will be some crossovers between both plots. Most of the game play focuses on using magical cards, which can provide useful resources, labor, weapons, and magic spells. As you go throughout the story you will be able to get new card which can be combined with your older cards, therefore creating even more powerful and creative abilities. Throughout the game you will have to carefully on how to use these powerful abilities if you want to achieve tactical advantages. Experience 3D battlefields that can be able rotated for the ...

  • A decent game, but nothing special compared with its contemporaries.

I bought this game because I heard it had a great story, but I found myself a bit disappointed. The writing is too weak for an RPG, especially in that era when there were a lot of story-driven games with better characters and graphics. Character motivations and their reactions don't feel organic. Most of the characters themselves are boring and the way they think and act either doesn't make sense, or is stereotypical. If it wasn't for having two separate story lines, there wouldn't be any replay value in it. On the plus side though, I found the tactics based battle system fun.

  • Kartia Review

One of the best RPG games developed by Atlus. It's a classic turn-based strategy game with lots of options for armor up and monster selection. Gameplay is fairly simple, but creates lots of excitement. It could use better graphics in terms of color scheme and better music selection. Overall, it is one of the better RPG games made for the Playstation.
