well built filter. the best part is the flexibility of the filter media. you can custom it anyway you like, or just use the carbon/sponge/biomax media that comes with it. with other HOB filters, you have to buy prepackaged all in one filter media, which is not flexible. for example, i chose not to use the carbon filter bag. that leaves me more space to add bio max for example. also, it was a little loud when i first primed it and got it going. then i just unplugged it for about 4 or 5 seconds and plugged back in. it got quiet then.

I live in an area where there are brief frequent power outages and this filter sometimes fails to self start. Other than that it is a great filter. My whisper power filter always self starts. I have both of these filters hanging on one tank. The intake tubes are much better on the whisper.

First off, I have a planted 45 gallon tank. It was a pain trying to find a decent filter that is catered to planted aquarium setups. This hang-on-back's filtration is incredibly thorough: you wouldn't know it by looking at it's seemingly low flow rate. Even just its bio-sponge has been taking out a lot more particulates & waste than my old 55 Aqueon Quietflow and its dual cartridges! The motor (located on the outside of unit; Quietflow is underwater) runs almost so quietly, I wonder if it's actually running sometimes! The Quietflow was so noisy, I could hear it from upstairs (the noise may have stressed out the fish, too). The filter itself is very easy to clean, and offers the customization of filter media like that of a canister filter. My favorite feature is the adjustable flow rate using the intake tube; it is a great boon to planted tanks, especially when establishing small, new plants, or even housing delicate fish/inverts. The one thing I wish it had, is a longer intake tube; it comes w/ one additional extension, but w/ both combined together, it only reaches about 7 or 8 inches. Still, it's a magnificent filter, and I am very pleased w/ its durability and performance!!Read full review

I've used Aquaclear filters before, and I was always happy with them. But since they changed the numbers since the last time I purchased one I actually bought the wrong one. It says it fits up to a 50 gallon tank, but I would think you'd need TWO this size or just buy a bigger one. I bought this one as a SECOND filter in my 55 gallon (when I discovered that my temp was not stable throughout the entire tank), so it is serving my purpose quite well. That said, I would have been disappointed if I were attempting to use JUST this one to filter my tank. But it's easy to use, easy to change out, and runs super quiet.

Aquaclear is my favorite HOB! Works super well for a 20 gal. The filter design is perfect for beneficial bacteria and can easily add more filter options with the nice large filtering area provided.
