About this product

Product Information

An original and challenging interpretation of the Labour Party's evolution. Written at a critical juncture in the history of the Labour Party, Speak for Britain! is a thought-provoking and highly original interpretation of the party's evolution, from its trade union origins to its status as a national governing party. It charts Labour's rise to power by re-examining the impact of the First World War, the general strike of 1926, Labour's breakthrough at the 1945 general election, the influence of post-war affluence and consumerism on the fortunes and character of the party, and its revival after the defeats of the Thatcher era. Controversially, Pugh argues that Labour never entirely succeeded in becoming 'the party of the working class'; many of its influential recruits - from Oswald Mosley to Hugh Gaitskell to Tony Blair - were from middle and upper-class Conservative backgrounds and rather than converting the working class to socialism, Labour adapted itself to local and regional political cultures.

  • The best history of the Labour Party I have read

Well researched and originally interpreted by an author who has never failed to be engage me. Martin writes so well that the heavy evidence is readily assimilated. Revisionist and thought-provoking. Learned so much from the anecdotes and the local illustrations

  • Gripping Socialist History

This is the best historical book I've ever read before. It reveals the extreme levels of poverty that majority of people had to endure and to try and keep alive. The two main political parties in Britain, the Whigs and Tories, seemed out of touch and seemed to want to ignore the plight of the conditions of the impoverished people had to endure. It was the birth of the Socialist Labour Party in the early part of the last century that spoke up for the poor people of this country. It had to gain the people's trust and when conditions started to improve through this new party, it gained more members and gained more power for them to try and continue to enhance living, working, educational and economic conditions so that people could exist in a better life than before. This is a real good read ...
