About this product

Product Information

Charlie Asher is a pretty normal guy. A little hapless, somewhat neurotic, sort of a hypochondriac. He's what's known as a Beta Male: the kind of fellow who makes his way through life by being careful and constant -- you know, the one who's always there to pick up the pieces when the girl gets dumped by the bigger/taller/stronger Alpha Male. But Charlie's been lucky. He owns a building in the heart of San Francisco, and runs a secondhand store with the help of a couple of loyal, if marginally insane, employees. He's married to a bright and pretty woman who actually loves him for his normalcy. And she, Rachel, is about to have their first child. Yes, Charlie's doing okay for a Beta. That is, until the day his daughter, Sophie, is born. Just as Charlie -- exhausted from the birth -- turns to go home, he sees a strange man in mint-green golf wear at Rachel's hospital bedside, a man who claims that no one should be able to see him. But see him Charlie does, and from here on out, things get really weird. . . . People start dropping dead around him, giant ravens perch on his building, and it seems that everywhere he goes, a dark presence whispers to him from under the streets. Strange names start appearing on his nightstand notepad, and before he knows it, those people end up dead, too. Yup, it seems that Charlie Asher has been recruited for a new job, an unpleasant but utterly necessary one: Death. It's a dirty job. But hey, somebody's gotta do it. Christopher Moore, the man whose Lamb served up Jesus' "missing years" (with the funny parts left in), and whose Fluke found the deep humor in whale researchers' lives, now shines his comic light on the undiscovered country we all eventually explore -- death and dying -- and the results are hilarious, heartwarming, and a hell of a lot of fun.

Moore's signature tossed-off humor is in full effect, and it's easy to care about his warm, lumpy, honest characters., Dizzyingly inventive and hypnotically engaging, A DIRTY JOB is . . . like no other book I've ever read., Death, of Course, Is Not Usually a Funny Subject, but in the Hands of Christopher Moore It Sure Is.

Super impressed with this seller! They had the best price by far for this book! Both the cost of the book and the shipping fee was far better than average! The book came exactly as described, it was well packaged and quite a bit earlier than expected! The seller was polite and replied quickly to my messages. I’ll definitely make another purchase soon! Thank you to the seller! Be safe and keep up the great work!

WONDERFUL book! Better than described, in just like new condition [not just good]. Packaged very carefully, shipped very securely. Great seller, would buy from again in a heartbeat! No communication occurred, but I imagine it would have been as good as the rest of their customer service. Very happy with purchase, thank you very much!

    Christopher Moore at his best.

Death. Dark beings living in the sewers of San Francisco. Hellhounds. These are just a few of the things that are ruining Charlie Asher's life. Good thing for us that we get to enjoy all of the ensuing chaos, courtesy of one of the most underrated authors of our time. If you are a fan of the macabre, and have a delightfully twisted sense of humor, then you will love this book. If not, then I'm sorry, but there is no way that we can be friends.

  • A Quirky, Canny, Hilarious Spin on Death & Its Merchant

Protagonist Charlie Asher, a "Beta Male," is a naturally cautious and timid soul, content with life as the proprietor of a thrift store. What sustains him is his wife, Rachel, who he can hardly believe ever consented to be his partner. When Rachel delivers their first child, Sophie, Charlie's life seems complete...for a moment. While still adapting to his new life as a father, he loses Rachel to a "cerebral thromboembolism." Matters are complicated when Charlie sees Minty Fresh, a used-music dealer who moonlights as a "Death Merchant," collect Rachel's "soul vessel." And now Charlie, thanks to his ability to see Fresh snapping up his wife's soul in her favorite CD, has been tapped for the same job. It is THEN that the narrative becomes hilariously bizarre. The remainder of the novel ...

  • Great book, keeps the pace through all books.

Whenever I pick up a book, one of the first things I look at is "How do these people talk?" If I can't identify with the character's language, there's no way I'm going to be able to keep step with a book. Christopher Moore's "A Dirty Job" has people talking like they should be talking. They stub their foot or bump their head, they curse. People scream into the night and neighbors tell them to #$(YGH. It's a great book to start off with, with great continuity, characters in this book show up in the other books and some of the same scenes they're in mirror stuff in other books. Great great writer.

  • A very funny book

This book has a great story and amazing plot that can only be described as "deadly". Not only does it have these qualities it is very funny (to me as a person with a beta male imagination). The characters and references in this book will make anyone sad that it has to end but that it ok because Christoper Moore has many other books that fill the same "gap" that this one filled so readily for me. It is a very good book for any reader casual or serious for the authors wit and charm make for a very good read.

  • Death where is thy sting?

Death has no sting in this non stop adventure into the world of the supernatural. If this book doesn't make you laugh then you should seek counseling . Great characters and well acted out adventure into the nether world of darkness and evil spirits. Christopher Moore is a treasure.
