I am 77 years of age and this book is, no doubt, the best sports narrative I've ever read! Touches the entire life of Koufax and suggests, given a chance early in his career, he may have been the best pitcher ever in MLB history.

Good luck following the content in this book. It reminds me of so many reads that try too hard to weave so many facts and tributes together into a cohesive storyline. This book "Crashes" in its convoluted web of minutiae. The writer, if given the chance to understand her train of thought (or MANY other person's trains of thought, for that matter), is amazing. In the first read-through of this book, I followed her because I can. Not many people would though, I'm certain--unless you let go and let the author lead you. For me, it's been a painful read. Her outline must have been some map. I can't recommend this book because there are better reads on who Sandy Koufax really was and what he contributed to MLB. If you read the preface to this book you will find just how thorough her studies were before she began the ultimate unimaginable task of doing what she did, in her angle. I think Sandy ultimately made the decision to go with her because of the roll she was on with other sports bios others had commissioned her to create. Tell his story, not one of the 72,145 in the stands. Read full review

I found that this book about Koufax, took me to one of the greatest games ever pitched by not just 1 but 2 pitchers!!It took me to my childhood as I replayed this game in my head and memory as I had listened to it live!Sandy Koufax is a great read as Sandy and Bill Hendley lock up in an unbelievable pitchers duel!! If you have not read this book and you love or even like baseball get it and READ it. Not only will you enjoy it everyone you tell about Sandy Koufax will want to read it!!Jane Leavy did awesome with her research and wrote a 5 STAR book. Any true baseball fan will love it even if they do not like the DODGERS.If you have not read this book Buy it and read SANDY KOUFAX by Jane Leavy.
Against the background of his perfect game on September 9th, 1965, Sandy Koufax's life is explored by sportswriter Jane Leavy. Most of the quotes and references come from Koufax's fellow players and friends since he won't talk about himself more than he has to. This lack of participation left the biography a little lacking in my opinion, but I still thought the book was good. Koufax comes off as an intelligent and well adjusted man, a great athlete, and the details regarding his perfect game are excellent. I recommend it as a casual read for fans who want to know a little more about the man behind the #32.
i met mr. koufax at a card show in los angeles many years ago. he was very friendly, polite and eager to please his fans. this book goes a bit more deeply into his personality and career than i had time to learn about at the show, and i am grateful that ms. leavy wrote it. it is a fascinating look at one of sports immortals. sandy koufax goes beyond just baseball, his persona and legend transcend the mere mortals who are in the headlines on the sports pages of todays papers. truly a worthwhile book.
