Elementary yarn that unravels at the end
One of my favorite Sherlock Holmes tales. George C. Scott is Sherlock, or thinks he is, much to the dismay of his family that wants him institutionalized so they can inherit his money. Dr Watson, the family appointed psychiatrist, played by Joanne Woodward foreshadows the sidekick played by Lucy Liu on TV's weekly new Elementary. Woodward is excellent as the somewhat smitten psychiatrist in charge of evaluating the delusional Sherlock and becomes more and more convinced he is more than the family wants her to believe and perhaps even more than the delusional Holmes thinks he is. Together they overcome seemingly everyday obstacles, with that hidden meaning that questions if a cigar is really sometimes only a cigar, until Watson is persuaded Scott is indeed Sherlock Holmes, or at least ... As the evaluation continues we learn Scott, the retired courtroom Judge is so concerned about his past decisions about the guilt and innocence of those he convicted that they are overshadowing his sense of reality, causing him to question good and evil, right and wrong, and the hidden meanings in the shadows of his life. Over all this is a solid mystery comedy that confronts all our fears and concerns about what is real and what is our imagination, with all the logical deductive abilities we have come to expect from Sherlock Holmes stories. In the end however, the movie unravels into a farce that confronts Moriarty in the shadows in which he has always lived without revealing anything new about him or ourselves. A little disappointing in the conclusion as they enter the dark tunnel to confront what may be only their own questionable conclusions about life and reality. But overall a very enjoyable yarn.

Missing
Much to my despair this version has the much loved market rampage cut out. I believe this is the version cut to fit for TV. If you can't get the full version you'll have to settle for this. It's still a joy to watch.

Almost Complete Version
This is wonderful classic with engaging and endearing characters. I would have given it 5 stars if it had been a complete version of the movie. A significant grocery scene was cut out for no apparent reason. If I had known that I would have just transferred my video tape to dvd instead if buying this almost perfect dvd version.
