When i was a boy, this t.v. show ruled my world and very likely started off my life long obsession with science fiction,i was barly 7 years old,i had missed out on Gerry Andersons Super car,but this peeked my intrest. You had your all action hero in Steve Zodiac,a ditzy robot side kick Robert the robot[not "robbie"]innocent sudo love intrest, and general girlie heroine Venus[still dont know to this day where she was supposed to have garnered her accent?]and slightly Nutty proffesor Mathew Mattic[the science boffin]Also, just to remind you that you were still watching a "KIDS" T.V. programme, who could forget Zoony the Lazoon, the tooty weird alien hybrid pet that belonged to Venus,"welcome home".But the real deal for my young mind was the Kicking space ship,Fireball xl5 and detachable nose cone Fireball Jnr,and the hover bikes the crew rode around on,or swung around on for the more cynical of you[I swear i never noticed the wires when i was 7!?]Every week i would tune in for my latest fix of space adventure and drama and high tech special F/X![Well it was 1963,what did you expect!?.]Consequently,i have never been the same since, thank god for Gerry Anderson and crew, his vision got me through most of my childhood years and he kept me comming back for more by following XL5,with Stingray,Thunderbirds,Cpt Scarlet,Joe 90 the Secret service and my other timeless fave,U.F.O.[Shame about Space 1999,but thats another story.]Looking back on Fireball XL5,yes i know its clunky and dated and children of todays C.G.I and games culture probably balk at the very idea of viewing what is now considered kitsch t.v.,but to this 51 year old kid,i can be 7 again and appreciate the down right surreal qualities of this excellent piece of t.v.Joy.They dont make em like they used to,all 39 episodes are included over 5 discs, and i got this for just over £20,a genuine bargain.Treat youself today, you cant go wrong!.[on the down side, there are no extras, unlike the american version of this set that will probably set you back at least double the price of this U.K. edition.]Happy eBaying,Majikal2007.Read full review
It was really great to be able to relive the memories of my youth. This was classic Gerry Anderson before he got to Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet. The stories are real boys comic boy hero stuff with Steve Zodiac never failing to win. When you look at the series now with it's raw basic simplicity, no attempts to paint out strings - you could actually see everything working. It is a far cry from todays real life computer wizardry but still a joy to behold. Kids were enthralled at the time by the fact of flying through Space and being able to visit all planets because of the Air Tablets that allowed them to breathe. It would probably be taken off the screens these days for Health and Safety reasons because "it may encourage children to go into space without a space suit" All in all an excellent package and I still image all the shows were in colour - never mindRead full review
I have always loved the Gerry & Sylvia Anderson Marionette's 1.Four Feather Falls 2.Suprcar 3. Fireball XL5 4.STINGRAY 5.Thunderbirds 6.Captain Scarlet ETC. My personal favourite has always been (Thunderbirds), However to get the collection of all episodes of Fireball XL5 to re-watch to reminisce when I was a boy watching this in my Grandparents home on a Sunday late afternoon with a boiled egg and loads of bread soldiers brings a little tear to your eye when you look down and see your Grandchildren and then you realise life has gone through a full circle again. How lucky am I to still be here to now see my Grandchildren enjoying the same children's programs I did at there age...
OK, This was for my Older Brother (Nearly 50), who fondly remembers the Old Gerry Anderson Shows (As I do) with extreme fondness....Seems like all who buy this title are those journeying back to their Childhood days. I'm sure he's enjoyed it, not heard otherwise... my memory of these shows is that they were ahead of their time. Gerry Anderson always had a unique vision of what things could be like, and puppetry enabled him to tell grander stories then he could have possibly done with live actors. The sets, effects, stories....all were bigger becuase of the medium he chose to work with. Great series, Great Purchase !!
