This little 35mm prime is one of the most versatile lenses for a canon full frame camera. It is very sharp even at full aperture. It is light - but not flimsy plastic like the 50 1.8 - and very compact. Much less bulky than the IS current model. Some people object to the noise it makes when focusing. Never bothers me. Overall just about the best lens I own - yes I do have a 50 1.2 L and have had the 35 1.4 L. Photos taken with this little 35 are every bit as sharp for all practical purposes but the camera with this lens is just much more portable and immediate.

I bought this lens after having bought the 85mm f1.8 (which I was stunned by the performance). After giving the 35mm 2 separate test I sold it. For the price it is poor considering the cost of the L series 24 - 105mm zoom, which is worth saving up for. I use Zeiss lenses adapted to Canon as they are fantastic, and the Canon Zoom just for convenience. I also have the L series 70 - 200mm and the L series 400mm prime, The Canon 35 f2 falls well below these for sharpness, whereas the 85mm f1.8 is as good, albeit with some chromic aberrations, but these can be corrected by software. So I bought the 35mm f2 and it was a costly mistake. Useless at F2 which is why I went for it. My advice is to steer clear. The Canon L series 24 - 105 is at its best at 35mm and is sharp at f4, i.e.. fully open. It also has image stabilisation, so either go for this of get a Contax Carl Zeiss Distagon = an adaptor to fit the EOS.Read full review

Good value little lens. Don’t expect L lens quality at budget price, but it’s a decent portable sharp product

I bought that lens for my APS-C camera for everyday use and mostly for street photography. The 35mm F2 is a very light, well constructed and fast. The aperture of 2 gives enough light to take photos indoors without the use of flash and the bokeh is very nice. Picture quality even at wide open apertures is excellent and if you use it at F4 to F11 gives the sharpest pictures I have ever seen. The only disadvantages are the lack of image stabilization system and the noisy focus mechanism but on the other hand focus is very very fast and accurate with my Canon 70D. For the prize sold is the best buy I had made so far!!!
The Canon ef 35mm f/2 is a small lens. If you don’t want to impress or intimidate people with your gear, It is a good choice. On a full frame, my copy has good contrast and good resolution already at f/2. The bokeh is not exceptional but it can be ok, depending on the background and the distance of the subject from it. Autofocus is noisy and the construction feels a bit cheap but also the price.
A great little lens, especially for low light situations. As I shoot a lot of weddings, I needed a lens for very low light situations like first dance's with only disco lights on. Even on a Canon 5d mk3 in these situations you need a good f/stop to get the images and for the lens to be able to focus in the first place. For around £200 this lens is a bargain. No, it will never be as sharp as the Sigma 35mm f1.4 that I have just bought, but that costs 4x as much. It will certainly produce good sharp images for a great price. The auto focus is noisy, you can hear this thing chug big time. But during first dances its never a problem - too much other noise going on. The only bad thing I can think of is it doesn't have USM, so you cannot override the auto focus as you can on most Canon lenses. However, you can switch it to manual focus if you prefer.Read full review

A bit of an impulse buy but knowing I could sell it a year later and get 90% of the purchase price back was all the reason I needed. An incredibly sharp lens and fun to use.

I have owned a lot of lenses for my DSLR's and this holds it's own as an excellent lens. I think I will sell my Sigma 50mm 1.4 as although the Sigma is very sharp and the bokeh is very smooth, the AF is inconsistent. I have also owned the 35L which is an excellent lens - but costs 3-4x more and is much heavier. The main plus points of this lens are; it's very sharp, very light, accurate AF and the price. The only real downsides are the AF noise which is quite buzzy. It's not too noticable on single shot AF, but on continuous AF it sounds like there's a loud wasp stuck in it! Given the price of Canon's newer lenses this is quite cheap.
Great lens for its price.I'm using it with my trusty Canon 5D mk2 and it works great. Highly recommended :)
