Paradigm City, itself the entirety of the known world, is literally a city with no history- 40 years ago, the mysterious Event erased the memories of all who live there. Memories are important there, and all traces of the past become very valuable commodities. Enter Roger Smith, a Negotiator by profession, who is often called in to deal with the criminal element. When those negotiations go bad, he summons The Big-O, a giant robot known as a Megadeus. Besides the interesting premise, The Big-O has a lot more going for it: a film noir feeling and style equal to the classic Batman: The Animated Series, but with an anime twist, naturally. It also boasts a great soundtrack, and just about the best ensemble voice cast I've come across in ages. This set, the first thirteen episodes of the 26-episode series, features some excellent self-contained stories and just begins to hint at the plot that will be the focus of the second half of the series. While there are some impressive giant robots involved (and plenty of property damage), the characters are the focus, and they're quite appealing, particularly Roger and the android, R. Dorothy Waynewright. It's a series where you can spot the influences- a little bit of Batman here, some James Bond there, a healthy dose of old Japanese live-action robot shows- and the theme song is doubtless a take on Queen's "Flash Gordon" themesong. But knowing what goes into a meal doesn't make it any less delicious, after all. The only negative point I can raise about the show is that in the complete series, the question of what happened forty years ago is never answered. So, if you go in expecting explanations for the mysteries surrounding Paradigm City, then you WILL be disappointed. But don't let that stop you- it's a series worth watching!Read full review
