Synopsis
The possibilities for three-dimensional manipulation of fabric - gathering, pleating, tucking, shirring, and quilting woven materials - are seemingly endless. To describe them all would be to describe the entire history of sewing. In The Art of manipulating Fabric , Colette Wolff has set herself just this task, and she succeeds brilliantly. Working from the simplest possible form - a flat piece of cloth and a threaded needle - she categorizes all major dimensional techniques, show how they are related, and give examples of variations both traditional and modern. The result is an encyclopedia of techniques that resurface, reshape, restructure and reconstruct fabric. .More than 350 diagrams support the extensive how-tos, organized into broad general categories, then specific sub-techniques .Handsome photos galleries showcase the breathtaking possibilities in each technique and aid visual understanding by emphasizing the sculptured fabric surface with light and shadow .Textile artists and quilters, as well as garment and home decor sewers, will expand their design horizons with the almost limitless effects that can be achieved., This volume demonstrates the techniques for the three-dimensional manipulation of fabric. It categorizes the techniques showing how they are related, giving examples of both modern and traditional variations. The techniques show how to reconstruct a flat piece of cloth using only a threaded needle., Presenting an encyclopedia of techniques to resurface, reshape, restructure, and reconstruct fabric. More than 350 diagrams show how to begin with the simplest flat piece of cloth and progress to a beautiful finished tapestry., The possibilities for three-dimensional manipulation of fabric - gathering, pleating, tucking, shirring, and quilting woven materials - are seemingly endless. Excellent

Great compilation of fabulous fabric techniques. I have never seen/used many of these and I find them fascinating. I would have loved to have seen some color photos and the different applications used in actual garments.

  • Excellent resource for the serious sewer

This book gives clear instructions and wonderful illustrations, both photo and line drawing, for a large variety of fabric manipulations. It tells many ways of creating texture in fabrics; ways to make flounces, godets, and ruffles in a variety of ways; shows every kind of pleat I have ever heard of; shows how to smock; and many other fabric manipulations. Some are done by hand and some involve machine stitching. My rule is to not buy a book unless it has at least three things in it that I will use. This book has five techniques I want to try right away and several to experiment with later. I found the book at my local library and checked it out. Then I renewed it for another two weeks. By the end of that period I knew I had to own a copy. How great to find it on eBay!

  • Quilter or dollmaker's "perfect" instruction book.

If you are a quiltmaker or a dollmaker you will love the detailed instructions in this book! If you want to make beautifully detailed fabric trims that the most complex sewing machine cannot do, this book will teach you how to easily make amazing padded quilting, ruffles, pleats, bubbles, folds, pintucks, whatever! I could see myself turning the instructions into making amazing christening gowns, doll clothes and childrens dresses even though I don't have children! Then, I thought of all the decorative items that I could make; pillows, valances, table linens, clothing, etc. This book just seems to inspire a sewer/quilter to want to make things if only just to try out so many of the various techniques that are so well explained and illustrated in this book. This book has detailed ...

  • Stitching, Pleating, Quilting, Smocking and More.

This is an amazing book. It offers inspiration in a variety of techniques for manipulating fabrics: stitching, pleating, quilting, smocking, gathering, ruffling...and more. The techniques are not shown in the context of a specific project to complete, so if you are looking for a project book this is not a good choice for you. This book is more of an inspirational book for sewing machine users, in much the same way that a knitter might use a stitch dictionary (although I imagine you could do some of the techniques by hand too- it would be extremely time consuming though.) This book would be a good choice for anyone who is interested in designing with fabric: art quilters, fashion, costume and accessories designers, fiber artists. The book is black and white. Now, normally I prefer ...

  • Treasure trove of knowledge

I love this book so much that I bought it to give as a gift to one of my graduating students! It really is a treasure trove of information about hundreds of ways to work designing textures on fabric.
