This is an early Daryl Hannah film and well worth a look. It does, more or less follows the book. As far as the film goes it's a rare treat. If you have read the books I would suggest you try the film. Well worth looking at. As a fan of the Jean M Auels works, I have read and enjoyed all 6 of her books a number of times and still enjoy reading them. Just as I enjoyed the film.

Clan of the Cave Bear is an adaptation of Jean M. Auel's first book in her "Earth Children" series, and sadly the only one ever filmed, this film stars Daryl Hannah and how a young child survives an earthquake only to be alone, she is found by a clan of Neanderthals who take her with them and bring her up as one of them.....if nothing else you might enjoy it so much you will want to read the books.
I found the dvd to be very dark visually, much of the action happens inside dark caves so it would be dark. The Neanderthal people were not quite as neanderthal as I would have liked, they looked too much like Ayla, but on the whole it was very enjoyable. I loved the book and all the series so when I found out that a dvd had been made of the first one I had to have it. I don't regret buying it and shall probably watch it again, and again....
If you have read the book this will not disapoint. Easy to follow the story with naration as part of the overall ambience. Filmed in spectular setting. Characters believeable. Would have liked a glimse of what is to come in the Valley fo the Horses at the end when Ayla walks into the distance.
I am a massive fan of the Earth Children books and it was good to see Ayla come to life on the screen, what a shame the sequals weren't made too. :)
