  • Get the VRII if you can afford it. If not don't sweat as its still great.

Big, heavy and beautiful!! A very solid lens with weight to match. Some may be put off by this by I like the feel of it and the mass helps to dampen movement caused by mirror movement during shutter actuation. Like most lenses it's sweet spot is at f5.6 and is noticeably softer wide open but it is far from unusable. I'll happily take this as the only other option is the 50% more expensive VRII model (not much better) or the crazy money but awesome 200/f2 I you want to shoot at 200mm and f2.8. On full frame the vignetting is quite bad at f2.8 down to f4 and is quite disturbing if shooting a light background. However I don't really notice it in most images I have taken at f2.8 as colourful backgrounds disguise the issue nicely. Overall it is not the perfect lens in terms of outright image ...

  • WICKED lens!! Go for it if you are after perfection!!

Great profressional lens!! Perfect on DX cameras while slight issues on FX however its still great!!! Size to weight ratio works perfectly fine with me althought some might feel its too heavy, mind you this lens is on every profressional photographer's neck!! Image quality is absolutely brilliant and no complaints up to now.

  • Suburb lens, excellent quality in product and images

Stunning picture quality and superbly fast focus, great lens. Recommended to me over the vrii as they didn't feel the vrii was worth the extra money. Nice feature on the vr are the 3 stop buttons at the front of the lens that stop auto focus, which gives the opportunity to focus where you want and hold it ready for quick shots (not on the vrii from what I'm awhere). Lens isn't as long as you think it will be (without the lens hood attached) which makes it very manageable. It is heavy as far as lenses go but it is a bigger zoom so what do you expect, plus if you have it attached to a pro body your use to a heavier camera anyway and the weight is no issue for myself. If weight does become a problem a mono pod will help to take the weight during use. These seem to be coming down in price ...
