I used thinner metal washers instead which resolved the issue. My chain line looks straight so I don't think my chainring is too close to the frame. Might get a mechanic to take a look.

Used the plastic washers with a soldering iron to melt the backs of the fittings to the chainring. From the sounds of it your chainset is sitting too close to your frame. From my exp the issue could be being caused by the square taper on your chainset being too worn from being over tightened or repeated tightening over a long period of time. It may also be that you are using a non Brompton bottom bracket which can also cause the issue as Brompton bottom brackets are offset to move the chainset away from the frame. Could be worth looking into with a Brompton mec
