Synopsis
Winner of the Lincoln Prize Acclaimed historian Doris Kearns Goodwin illuminates Abraham Lincoln's political genius in this highly original work, as the one-term congressman and prairie lawyer rises from obscurity to prevail over three gifted rivals of national reputation to become president. On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war. That Lincoln succeeded, Goodwin demonstrates, was the result of a character that had been forged by experiences that raised him above his more privileged and accomplished rivals. He won because he possessed an extraordinary ability to put himself in the place of other men, to experience what they were feeling, to understand their motives and desires. It was this capacity that enabled Lincoln as president to bring his disgruntled opponents together, create the most unusual cabinet in history, and marshal their talents to the task of preserving the Union and winning the war. We view the long, horrifying struggle from the vantage of the White House as Lincoln copes with incompetent generals, hostile congressmen, and his raucous cabinet. He overcomes these obstacles by winning the respect of his former competitors, and in the case of Seward, finds a loyal and crucial friend to see him through. This brilliant multiple biography is centered on Lincoln's mastery of men and how it shaped the most significant presidency in the nation's history., Winner of the Lincoln Prize Acclaimed historian Doris Kearns Goodwin illuminates Lincoln's political genius in this highly original work, as the one-term congressman and prairie lawyer rises from obscurity to prevail over three gifted rivals of national reputation to become president. I ordered three items from this seller, and one was damaged in transit (the seller is not at fault for this). However the seller very quickly righted everything, communicating with me the entire time. The other two items were in perfect condition, arrived on time, and were exactly as described. They were very quick to fix what was wrong, and were very polite about the entire thing. I will be buying from them again in the future.

The seller Orion Tech LLC is one of my occasional shopping sites. This purchase I had a problem, the only one so far. The books were packed well, shipped quickly and just as described. But this was not the book I ordered. I sent two photos of the book received and the ISBN code and I received a prompt refund. I bought two books the third book was free! I am still delighted being an Orion Tech Books customer and will be shopping at Orion Tech Books in the future. Thank you.

A good addition to any Civil War library

I had a paperback copy of this that I lent out and never got back. So it was great to find a hardcover copy on ebay for less than $10. Even better that the book was in good condition. If you haven't read this yet, it is a good companion to any civil war history book. Most civil war books cover the military successes and failures of both sides, this book covers the political goings on that were happening in the Union government during the Civil War. It would be great to read something similar for what was going on politically for the Confederate government. The book is a pretty easy read, and covers most of the personalities involved in the Union government during the Civil War. Yes, it has plenty of pages, but the reading itself is enjoyable and accessible.
