      5/8" LH Acme Tap

      Initially the tap looked OK straight out of the box. The tap being left handed it was ground for right hand. This can be rectified without too much problem. Its main issue is size, the one I received is .015" oversize measuring .640" for what should be a nominal .625". It cuts OK in yellow metals leaving a slight rag on the back side of the thread, but cuts poor in cast iron leaving an almost unrecognisable thread. I wasted a days work using this tap because I didn't measure the thing until it was too late. If you are looking to mate this to an existing thread, my advice would be not to bother unless you can get it clarified by the supplier that it is of a suitable size. In the end I made a replacement leadscrew to match the tap and all came out ok.
