Being a fan of all things X-Men related, I just couldn't resist buying this latest foray into the animated world of everyone's favourite mutants! Don't be misled by the genre - not all animation is 'just for kids'! Probably cashing in on the character's popularity thanks to the three X-Men movies, the series focusses on Wolverine as he endeavors to reunite the X-Men following a mysterious explosion which destroys the school. Professor Xavier and Jean Grey are missing, although the Professor subsequently turns up on Genosha, deep in a coma and being cared for by none other than Magneto. Somehow able to telepathically contact the team from the future, he tells them of a dreadful war that has ravaged the Earth, simply because the X-Men gave up his cause and disbanded. It is up to ... Being a fan of all things X-Men related, I just couldn't resist buying this latest foray into the animated world of everyone's favourite mutants! It is up to Wolverine to keep the team together and try to alter the course of history ..... Volume 1 contains the first six episodes, plus the bonus episode 'Wolverine Vs Hulk', which contains a very brief glimpse of Wolverine wearing his first be-whiskered uniform from his Department H days! Definitely one for the fanboys! Most of the more popular team members are represented here, with others popping up now and then in cameos. The Brotherhood are the main protagonists, but the Sentinels make a welcome appearance, as does Shadow King, Mojo and Spiral - but where is Longshot?! The animation is fresh and often visually stunning, with great attention to detail. The stories themselves contain surprisingly adult themes and actually follow the events of the comics quite closely, with each episode telling a stand-alone story yet still remaining part of the whole. Best of all are the voices, some of which are surprisingly close to how I imagined their comic counterparts to sound! In conclusion, this is a faithful and well-produced addition to the X-Men stable and, in my opinion, you can't go far wrong by adding this DVD to your collection!
