Karen Davis (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is now in hospital recovering from the events of the first chapter. This serves as no protection for her though as the curse from the house still manages to pay her a little visit. This is when her sister, Aubrey (Amber Tamblyn) enters the story determined to discover what is happening to Karen and whether the tales of the house are actually true. Watching the first film is not a necessity in this case as things are pretty well clarified. The focus is still based on the Japanese folk-law tale where if a person dies in a state of rage, that torment remains to haunt the house they lived in and all those who enter. Early on in the film three unbelieving teenage girls walk straight into the house (the ones with no respect always get it worse than the rest) so as you can imagine they learn pretty quickly about the consequences. After being drawn into the house herself, Aubrey follows the clues to try and pin down the origins of the curse and ultimately how she can break it. Joining her on this scary trail is keen reporter Eason (Edison Chen) He also believes he has been affected by the curse so he is just as determined as she is to discover the secrets of the house. The movie has all the chills and spine-tingling thrills of the first film. The disturbing little boy of the house and his playful cat return as well to push you even further into decent. Fans will welcome the return of such a loved classic horror film and others who are new to the story will just enjoy a great night behind the couch. Director of the first film, Takashi Shimizu, certainly hasn’t lost his touch when it comes to raising the hairs on the back of our necks so your in pretty safe hands.

A great (if not better) sequel
Why did i buy it? Coz i've seen the first film - obviously! In my humble opinion this sequel is definately as good as the first - & possibly better in so far as the horror stakes have been upped. As anyone who's watched it will know, in the first film, it was the inhabitants & their nearest & dearest who succumbed to the curse of Ju-on. In this sequel, it's the crew of a TV show that is being filmed in the now infamous 'Haunted House'. Director Shimizu Takashi has also kept to the original style of devoting a separate story to each of the main characters. These stories all explain the characters connection to the house (& therefore the curse). They all tie-in together nicely (as they did in the first) - though i will say that the first scenes are unexplained. It isn't until the ... Why did i buy it? It's definately scarier & more gripping. As well as new scares i still find the way the 'mother ghost' moves makes my skin crawl - & if little Toshio doesn't have you checking behind the sofa (& god forbid you have a black cat) then i don't know what will. I bought the 2 disc special collectors edition which has English dubbing as well as subtitles - this is fine for anyone who can't really pay attention to the film for it's 88 minutes - but the dubbing is actually pretty poor. Just as it is on the first film. See my review on the first film for my full criticism of the dubbing!!! If you liked The Grudge then you have to see this - & if you haven't then watch it & then watch this!

We thought that scary, pasty-faced kids with black hair and wide eyes had hit a cultural iceberg long ago, well before this sequel to the Sam Raimi-endorsed Yank remake of the J-Horror flick, Ju-On, emerged on the horizon. And it’s certainly a floater; by-the-numbers stuff with Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Karen (from the first film) popping up alongside her sister Audrey (Amber Tamblyn) for a series of spooky gags involving milk and threesomes (though sadly not together). Anyone else wondering why they bothered can check out the East Meets West featurette, dedicated entirely to why the flick was greenlit, and the self-explanatory – and entirely un-ironic – Storyline Development. But the best goodie on offer here is the 13-minute profile on the man behind the movie, Takashi Shimizu, who’s now ...
