Kiho'alu - sweet and lovely
Kiho'alu or slack key music is fast gaining an audience worldwide. Dennis Kamakahi, joined by his son David on ukulele, with this beautiful set of songs, shows why the music of Hawaii is becoming so popular. The beautiful kiho'alu in both instrumental and vocal songs showcasing a love of family and the warm music that love produces. The songs on the CD include traditional and class Hawaiian music as well as an interesting instrumental duet of the theme song from "Around the World in 80 Days" giving David a chance to show his wonderful ukulele style. A catch country style of picking is shown in "He 'Ai No Kalani" reflecting Dennis' experience with Eddie Kamae and the Sons of Hawaii way back when. The vocal "He'eia" reminds me of a younger Gabby Pahinui, and "Ulili" is always one of my ... Kiho'alu or slack key music is fast gaining an audience worldwide. There are two versions of "Ike la Ladana or Queen's Jubilee" written by Queen Lili'uokalani for Queen Victoria's Jubilee in London. The first version is vocal, with Dennis' beautiful tenor, the second is instrumental, a beautiful relaxing piece. Overall, this is a beautiful relaxing CD with instrumental kiho'alu interspersed with beautiful vocals.

OHANA, The best of his CDs
I own Dennis Kamakahi's other CDs, and I think they're good, but OHANA is the best of all!, specially the first selection, Ulili'E, sung with his son David. I loved Israel Kamakawiwo's interpretation of Ulili'E, but after hearing the Reverend's interpretation, I don't think there's any doubt which is better! The whole disc is very, very enjoyable; calming yet entertaining. Beautiful! I might not be an expert in Hawaiian music; I only know what I like and not like. This album is one of the best I own and I listen to it regularly. This is Kamakahi at his best!
We love this CD. The music is upbeat but soothing. The songs are catchy even though we don't speak Hawaiian we find ourselves singing along. We also liked the commentary that was included telling us a little about the songs. We bought another CD by Kamakahi but it is not as upbeat.
