This Receiver takes some time to set up correctly. We use it primarily for our home theater. The included microphone and very clear on screen (TV monitor) instructions does take a bit longer than expected to set up and play, but the results for us are amazing. We have Bose front, rear and center speakers and Polk Audio SW that sounded fine. Once all connected and calibrated, we put on a blue ray DVD and pressed play; those speakers sounded the way that the Bose engineers intended them to sound. We are amazed at the difference in clarity, presence and performance of the speakers that gave us the impression that we had new speakers! The remote is a wee bit less intuitive than the previous Sony receiver's was, but once you understand how the system functions it is actually more user friendly by replacing the need for the Bravia remote, the Blu-Ray remote and even the cable company DVR remote (for the most part). I removed the Denon receiver four feet in order to fit it into our Ethan Allen home theater furniture and I fear that the receiver cannot cool efficiently but only time will tell. (I had no other choice due to the size of the receiver and the available pigeon holes. The volume indicator is odd in that at the lowest setting, the numbers are negative and as you increase the volume the negative numbers increase to positive. Not sure why it was necessary to change from "0" to larger increments to indicate volume but there you are. I think that we have only uncovered the surface with this receiver and that it is capable of giving us more surprising performance once we learn more, but the included paperwork is quite limited and the on-line owners manual is not really targeted to a regular (read as non audiophile) consumer. A definite plus is the front USB connection that allows us to play our MP3 music and also use the remote control to advance or go back. The con to this is the music plays alphabetically by artist only. I have yet to discover how to play the music on random setting using our Sandisk MP3 players. Perhaps Denon thinks everyone has an Apple product (presuming that I-products will play on random mode). In the past 25 years, I have used (and still have) an Onkyo receiver, two Sony receivers and now this Denon. Perhaps the technology has improved significantly in that long time span but this is by far the most versatile and the best sounding equipment I have yet to own. Incidentally I am a low end consumer not wishing to pay more than $250 for a receiver.Read full review

This replaces an older Sony 7.1 AVR. The Denon 5.1 AVR sounds much better and stereo music from any source can be played on all 5 speakers instead of just the front two.. We can hear all the words of songs and music is much more enjoyable. I love the USB port that plays both memory stick and IPOD content wile displaying the song titles. This has been a huge improvement to our home music system.

It is just what I needed. All is in good working order and really good shape. The only problem I have is ups. The system had obviously been dropped sometime during delivery. The right corner is busted and all the plastic pieces were rattling around in the system. Everything still works excellent, just cosmetic issues.
