My first introduction to Neil Young came in a vinyl copy of this album owned by my brother. I was blown away by this nasally-voiced Canadian who mixed American folk, country and good old rock and roll into this heady brew. The album is half solo acoustic, half group electric. It combines Young's beautiful, poignant song writing and detailed lyrics in a form of musical Americana that just works. The solo set has Young on acoustic, vocals and some harmonica and demonstrates his sublime song writing. It sets the listener up for the whirlwind that is the electric set. Songs such as Powderfinger (one if his finest), Cortez the Killer and Hey Hey My My played with passion and verve with his band wringing the necks out of their equipment. Young used low wattage Fender Tweed amplifiers and they sag and wilt under the demands that he placed on them. This is the Neil Young sound and it is perfection. For me, this album underlines his undeniable genius and it is one of those albums to be savoured before your hearing goes south.Read full review
