About this product

Product Information

Director David JacobsenÆs DOWN IN THE VALLEY plays like a romantic, operatic lament for the disappearing cinematic and real-life icon: the American cowboy. Many of the elements that would fuse, say, a classic John Wayne character are present in Edward NortonÆs (PRIMAL FEAR, 25TH HOUR) character, Harlan Fairfax Caruthers: heÆs polite, soft-spoken, yet stubbornly brave and handy with Colt steel and lead. While at home in Death Valley in the mid 1800s, these characteristics are positively anachronistic in modern-day San Fernando Valley. How else to explain the reaction of a gaggle of giggling teenagers to Harlan as he pumps their gas? One of the teens, Tope (Evan Rachel Wood), is immediately attracted to these charms and invites Harlan along to the beach. A whirlwind romance follows, much to the chagrin of TopeÆs (short for October) father, Wade (David Morse), who senses there is more to Harlan than meets the eye. Indeed, things begin to unravel when Harlan lies about "borrowing" a horse from a local rancher that leads to a threat at gunpoint. To make matters worse, Harlan ingratiates himself more by spending time with TopeÆs attention-starved younger brother, Lonnie (Rory Culkin). Eventually, as more of the dangerous demons beneath HarlanÆs charming veneer reveal themselves, action must be taken and justice meted out, Old West-style. At times tense and, alternatively, quiet, DOWN IN THE VALLEY features some creative camera work from cinematographer Enrique Chediak that fits both moods. Also, be on the look-out for a scene-long quotation from TAXI DRIVER.

  • See this for the acting (added bonus that you see Ed Norton's body).

Ed Norton plays the part of the "lost cowboy" well. Very believeabe, you start to empathise with his character and almost fall in love with the idea of this loveable rogue. The film itself would have benefited from an edit, as it really does go on, and on. Drama builds up, but so does a tiny bit of boredom as you see where this film is headed and would like to get there a bit sooner. Overall a really good, well acted film, but a film you'll probably only see once.

  • Down in the Valley

This film had both good and bad points. The good points: the acting was excellent, Edward Norton is always great and the musical score was very moving. The bad points: the pacing seemed a bit slow at times and the ending was a bit of a let down as well. The whole "western film" set scene was wired and at first I thought Harland was dreaming it up. Very odd! I'm sure some people will love this film and it might be worth watching once, but for me one viewing was enough.

  • Dark side of a drifter

A jobless drifter with fantasies of being a cowboy arrives in a Los Angeles suburb and a teenage girl and her kid brother are mesmerised by his charisma. But as they discover, there is a very dark side to this enigmatic man. Class performances from Edward Norton and Evan Rachel Wood.

  • down in the valley

i saw this film on tv a while ago and had to get a copy, its a really endearing film and the main character harlan is not what he seems.yet hes a character that although does bad things you kind of feel sorry for him.probably a film more for the girls but its not a heavy chick flick.
