About this product

Product Information

Director Roland Emmerich explores the mystery surrounding William Shakespeare in this period drama set in Elizabethan England, when tightly-guarded political secrets were often exposed on the stages of London's most prominent theatres. For centuries, historians have searched for clues as to who really wrote the plays credited to Shakespeare. Now, for the first time in film, Emmerich and screenwriter John Orloff offer one possible solution to this enduring enigma.

Reviews
USA Today - ANONYMOUS is a well-acted yarn that also is a tribute to the unstoppable force of art -- even if it implies that only an aristocrat could create it., Daily Express - A gripping historical thriller, Chicago Sun-Times - A splendid experience: the dialogue, the acting, the depiction of London, the lust, jealousy and intrigue., Variety - A handsomely staged and decidedly straight-ahead costume drama

  • Wonderful Film - Explores the Mystery of Who Wrote the Plays of Shakespeare

When WS died he left not one book, not even the bible. Strange for a man who should have had a mountain of books which he must have read to write his plays. Maybe one day the truth will out. Fine performances by everyone and a lovely script. A must see movie.

  • Might be more fun to read a book?

I'd been reading a couple of books about Shakespeare and this sounded like an interesting film....but.... The acting, particularly Rhys Ifans, is good but I found it hard to follow the plot as it leapt about in time in the Earl of Oxford's life, whilst some characters aged and some didn't. I still find the idea of Shakespeare's identity interesting but I'm not sure I'd recommend this film to anyone also interested.
