Forst time fix
I opted for this one purely on description. It stated it was for a type 451 car and indeed it was. I looked at the ring but I could not tell if there was any special or high quality anti corrosion coating. As the old ring had split, the failure could have been due to either corrosion of the ring or the CV joint. It is disappointing compared to Volvo ones. I had changed the original rings on a 1993 Volvo just a few months earlier and I do not believe this ring will last 24 years. I base this on the condition of the mounting metal rather than the ring itself. That said, the coating on the Smart's ring looked like common or garden silver zinc coating and not the better gold coloured zinc coating which has deeper plating. I thoroughly cleaned the CV joint and used a waterproof marine ... I opted for this one purely on description. It stated it was for a type 451 car and indeed it was. I looked at the ring but I could not tell if there was any special or high quality anti corrosion coating. As the old ring had split, the failure could have been due to either corrosion of the ring or the CV joint. It is disappointing compared to Volvo ones. I thoroughly cleaned the CV joint and used a waterproof marine grease to aid assembly. Apparently, lithium grease absorbs moisture and I dislike copper grease which has metal particles and causes microcracking. I did not use heat to fit as I didn't want to compromise anti corrosion properties. I used an old bearing case as a drift to press it on. The results are good. No ABS light anymore and stable wheel speed readings through diagnostic tool. I can't tell if it will last longer than a cheaper one but it is a successful first time repair.
