About this product

Product Information

The year is 1803, and Darcy and Elizabeth have been married for six years. There are now two handsome and healthy sons in the Pemberley nursery, Elizabeth's beloved sister Jane and her husband, Bingley, live within seventeen miles, the ordered and secure life of Pemberley seems unassailable, and Elizabeth's happiness in her marriage is complete. But their peace is threatened and old sins and misunderstandings are rekindled on the eve of the annual autumn ball. The Darcys and their guests are preparing to retire for the night when a chaise appears, rocking down the path from Pemberley's wild woodland, and as it pulls up, Lydia Wickham, an uninvited guest, tumbles out, screaming that her husband has been murdered. In a pitch-perfect recreation of the world of Pride and Prejudice, P.D. James elegantly fuses her lifelong passion for the work of Jane Austen with her talent for writing detective fiction. She weaves a compelling story, combining a sensitive insight into the happy but threatened marriage of the Darcys and the excitement and suspense of a brilliantly crafted detective story. Death Comes to Pemberley enshrines the qualities her readers have come to expect: psychological and emotional richness of characterisation, vivid evocation of place, and a credible and superbly structured plot, in a powerful and distinguished work of fiction.

  • Jolly good read! no nightmares with this!.I wanted to confirm my thougths!

Death comes to Pemberley, I loved this book, PD James is a the mistress of "who dun it".For me she bought Darcy to life I think his manner was from shyness..I did warm to him. For those of us who like a murder mystery, with no gratuitous violence or descriptions,or foul language this is a good read..Of course I knew who did the deed but with a twist,,I will say no more!!!!. Enjoy! enjoy! Something similar Laurie R.King and Carola Dunn 1920's and Veronica Stallwood present day.

  • Death comes to "Death comes to Pemberley"

Very disappointed I expected better from someone like P.D.James. The characters were vaguely going through the motions with no depth and I actually found I really didn't care about them by the end of the book! It takes place a few years after Darcy and Elizabeth get married when Lydia and Wickham descend on them at Pemberley. Wickham is drunk and is charged with murder but Darcy is doubtful if he actually did it ( by this point I had stopped caring). There are references to Persuasion and Emma were a bit cringeworthy. All in all a pale sequel.
