...the playing? Poignant, powerful....Blues is the lingua franca. Duke gives Trane plenty of running room, as Monk did, laying out his solo on `Take The Coltrane,' comping nimbly elsewhere. No bonus tracks, and none needed.

The only problem is that you don't get enough on this CD - less than half of what one can fit onto it. That is the problem of the original masters of course - but it would have been good to have added unpublished tracks or alternative takes. Ellington was often misunderstood, tending to be ahead of his time - this album demonstrates why. Nothing straight forward here, just pure quality. Each track is played in a way that forces the listener to concentrate on the intricacies of the ensemble. It is not background music and not to be ignored. Each playing is better than the first as you appreciate the arrangements. Buy it and enjoy real jazz at the highest level. Track listing 1. In A Sentimental Mood - Kossoff, Paul 2.
