About this product

Product Information

Two thousand people go missing in Alaska every year. They vanish in the middle of mountain footraces, on fishing boats in the Bering Sea, on small planes in the Bush. Now a geologist known for going walkabout with his rock hammer has disappeared from the Suulutaq Mine in the Park. Was it deliberate? An accident? Foul play? Native Aleut Private Investigator Kate Shugak may be the only person who can find out. But for the fact that Kate, too, is now among the missing...

Reviews
"Richly nuanced, highly entertaining... The book is sprinkled with wit, studded with exquisite descriptions of the rugged landscape, and filled with opinionated and endearing characters... The dialogue is smart, authentic, and reminiscent of Elmore Leonard" - Publishers Weekly " If you are looking for something unique in the field of crime fiction, Kate Shugak is the answer" - Michael Connelly "Stabenow is blessed with a rich prose style and a fine eye for detail. An outstanding series" - Washington Post "An antidote to sugary female sleuths: Kate Shugak, the Aleut private investigator" - New York Times "Maintains Stabenow's reputation for concise prose, pithy dialogue, full bodied characters, and intriguing plotting. Crime fiction doesn't get much better than this" - Booklist "A clever, colourful, credible tale" - Literary Review "While Stabenow's plots are always neat and clever, it is the evocation of the northernmost US state and the way in which people adapt to its harsh environment that makes these books memorable" - Literary Review, 'Stabenow is blessed with a rich prose style and a fine eye for detail. An outstanding series' Washington Post .

  • Less than a treason

Why can't Ms. Stabenow write 12 books a year? This series has been the most compelling, complex and engaging of any written. This particular book is all that a reader could want. Her characters are deep, human and flawed but definitely unforgettable, even though it has been several books since they last appeared. I personally hope for many, many more Kate books until she's as old as Ruthie!

A read featuring Kate Shugak is always compelling. Love the “ park rats.” And her description of the Alaskan bush: fabulous. Already ordered the next book in the series!
