Reviews
Ranked #53 in Q's "100 Greatest British Albums" - "...An unmistakably homegrown contemplation of such socialblind spots as mental illness, class and criminality...", "...Reveals a surprisingly logical progression...Gabriel sharpens his writing and expands his sonic scope with every release..." Rating: A-, "...His masterstroke, unmatched even by SO. Writing from beatbox rhythms, he pulled every element of sound and lyrical impact into the dramas he'd imagined..."

  • Reinvesting in another classic album

I bought this album on vinyl when it first came out, but it went along with all my other records when I was burgled. I recently got earwormed by a succession of Peter Gabriel songs from these first 4 albums, so thought it was time to reinvest. No surprises, I knew it was good 30 odd years ago...

  • I was expecting a better Gabriel

If it were not for the famous songs, this album would be a complete delusion. It's not one of the best of Peter Gabriel, but it does show the road he took to arrive at the great success OF Albums like US! Far from it!

  • A masterpiece of experimental rock.

This album has a dark feel evident throughout which is strange and at times relentless in creating its mood. It has some great tracks on it with my three favourites being 'and through the wire', 'games without frontiers' and 'Biko' (which is even more harrowing if you know of the story of Steve Biko). There are some great musicians here with brilliant songwriting. It is good to listen to all the way through as there definitely is a thread running through every track which tells a story somewhat. An utterly amazing album which I would recommend to anyone especially a Prog Rock fan.

  • His masterpwork perhaps.

one of my faves but am not overawed by the remaster. There seems to be more space in the mixes and there is better separation. Slightly darker than I remember, actually, and not one for first thing in the morning maybe.
