The River Rat (VHS, 1993)
After serving thirteen years of a life sentence for murder, Billy McCain (Tommy Lee Jones), is home from prison. He has a thirteen year old daughter, Jonsy (Martha Plimpton) that he has never had the chance to know and now doesn't quite know how or where to get started. Billy and his friend and his girlfriend robbed an old lady who was a hermit. In the process, she pulled out a gun and Billy's friend took it and killed her. They found a very large amount of money in her garbage filled bedroom and took it. Carelessly speeding in front of the police, a chase ensues and the car crashes into the stone wall of a cemetary entrance. Billy runs and hides the money inside the coffin of a person just buried. The car exploded and burned killing Billy's friend, and supposedly burning up all the money. ... She was pregnant with Billy's baby. On parole, he is now home on the bayou with his mother and Jonsy. Billy is working as a fishing guide, and Jonsy is trying to fix up an old boat. She is curious about both him and the mother who ran off and left her, and has lots of questions that Billy is either reluctant to answer or just embarrassed to answer. Billy begins to warm to Jonsy and begins working on the boat with her, eventually completely rebuilds it like new. His ex-girlfriend is living in Memphis and he wants to see her and find out why she testified against him. He is still somewhat in love with her and needs answers. The police ask the Parole Board for permission to allow Billy to take the new boat (The River Rat) with his daughter as far as Memphis. The prison doctor who arranged Billy's release shows up. After years of abuse and mental torture, Billy admitted that he knew where the money was hidden. The Doctor only let him out so that he could lead him to it. Billy and Jonsy are now bonding, and Billy knows that the Doc (Brian Dennehe) will never leave him alone. The Doc shows up at the fishing camp and he and Billy go out in a boat. The Doctor threatens to send Billy back to prison and a fight breaks out. The Doctor goes overboard and Billy thinks that he drowned. But, bad pennies keep turning up, and the Doctor swims ashore in the dark. Jonsy has a little friend named Wendel. He is a little black boy who's daddy just died two days before. He is supposed to go live with his aunt who is some kind of witch. He is scared of her and hides in the River Rat. Billy and Jonsy take off for Memphis and half way there they find Wendel. What they don't know is that the Doctor survived, and committed a murder framing Billy, and now he is following. In the process of the murder he was rolling around in poison ivy and is starting to break out. Doc catches up with Billy in Memphis and forces him to take him to the money. Convinced that the Doctor will kill them all as soon as he has the money, he decides that he has no choice but to escape. A harrowing trip through swamps and down the Mississippi River, dodging exploding fuel barges during a storm, to eventually wind up in that old cemetary. Billy and the kids get away, but the Doctor gets the money. He turns himself into the police and tells the story of what happened. Convinced that nobody would believe him, a convicted murderer, he is surprised when fishermen come across the money floating in the swamp and a man covered with poison ivy. Billy had no poison ivy sores, and only the killer would be full of it.

River Rat
This is a very good movie. Tommy Lee Jones is a very good actor. We had seen this movie years ago. My son wanted to find the movie, so I bought him one and then bought me one. This is a story kids would like to watch with you.
