The John Playford dance musician's bible
I've been a fan of this book ever since it first appeared in 1985. If you are, like me, a lover of John Playford's collection of dance tunes, then this edition is a must. Beautifully laid out and readable, it covers all known versions of the tunes through all 18 of the original editions of Playford's collection, which had one of the longest spans in print of almost any dance music collection. Jeremy Barlow's edition contains a small number of facsimile illustrations from the originals, but it is not a repository for the dance moves. For the first time, though, all the tunes are together in one book. The music is scored for high instruments; players of cellos, bass guitars etc. should have little trouble adapting the tunes to suit. Jeremy Barlow is a leading light of the Broadside Band, ...
