Product Information

Set in Romania during a time of great social turmoil, this gritty political drama stars Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson as a newlywed couple entering the country for the first time. Branagh plays Guy, a hopeless optimist who is easily swayed in his views. When he starts hanging out with British members of the Secret Service, he becomes embroiled in some death-defying schemes that irretrievably alter his life. His wife, Harriett (Thompson) is none too pleased at these events, and their marriage hits the rocks as the daredevil tendencies of Guy upset the equilibrium in their relationship. Based on a true story, FORTUNES OF WAR is a fascinating glimpse into lives torn apart by the changing social fortunes of a country in turmoil.

    Highly recommended if you enjoy long, involved storytelling in exotic locations.

    A classic BBC mini-series first shown in the USA on Masterpiece Theater. Excellent acting, writing, and production. Filmed on location (unusual for BBC in the '80's) in the Balkans, Greece, and Egypt. Based on a semi-autobiographical series of novels set in the early years of WWII in the Balkans and Levant. Engaging, eccentric characters. Shows the war in a theater of war given little attention to in other films or books and its impact on ordinary people, especially a young married English couple caught up in the conflict. DVD was in good shape for its age.

    Fortunes of War - an accurate film adaptation of the two trilogies. Thompson and Branagh are exceptional.

    This is a 1987 adaptation of two trilogies, and manages to cover a wide range of characters and locations and incidents.
