Ding dong Ginger's dead.
The success of Geri's second album I think, was let down by her new image. Ginger had well and truly been killed off. There's not a hint of the Geri of old in the packaging of this album, and the new image wasn't favoured by all (including me). Even the music had changed. The strings, breathy vocals and pop diva-like aspirations of her debut have long gone, only to be replaced by a rather confusing album. After the pointless motor-engine samples of "Dragster" (bizarrely a track on their own) she launches into "Scream if you Wanna Go Faster", a 1960s tinged rock track. What follows is a mish-mash of style and influences that refuse to settle into a cohesive whole. Geri serves up helpings of acoustic ballads in "Circle Round The Moon" and "Love Is The Only Light", up-beat funk with "Shake ... Geri's vocal range is particularly limited but she wisely never stretches herself. The bad apple and easily the worst song on the album is her pointless, tacky cover of "It's Raining Men", which manages to trample all over the melody and subvert the innocent playful lyrics of the original and create something rather more tawdry. Penultimate track "Heaven and Hell (Being Geri Halliwell)" is an enjoyable send-up of her celebrity image and a poke at tabloid journalists, but heaven and hell is also a fitting metaphor for this brave, but ultimately flawed second album.

Geri's second album SIYWGF featured some of her finest moments, but also her worst. When this album is good - it's great, and when it's bad - it's dire. Shake Your Bootie Cutie + Feels Like Sex are songs which are almost cringeworthy but then songs like Calling or Strength Of A Woman or Circles Round The Moon are just lovely. A big departure from her debut Schizophonic - this album is more fun, more sex, more love, much better and more Geri.
