About this product

Product Information

The original hardcover edition of a perennial favorite, The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, which has sold more than one million copies and is the only novel to win both the Newbery Medal and the Carnegie Medal. Bod is an unusual boy who inhabits an unusual place--he's the only living resident of a graveyard. Raised from infancy by the ghosts, werewolves, and other cemetery denizens, Bod has learned the antiquated customs of his guardians' time as well as their ghostly teachings--such as the ability to Fade so mere mortals cannot see him. Can a boy raised by ghosts face the wonders and terrors of the worlds of both the living and the dead? The Graveyard Book is the winner of the Newbery Medal, the Carnegie Medal, the Hugo Award for best novel, the Locus Award for Young Adult novel, the American Bookseller Association's "Best Indie Young Adult Buzz Book," a Horn Book Honor, and Audio Book of the Year.

Reviews
The Graveyard Book manages the remarkable feat of playing delightful jazz riffs on Kipling's classic Jungle Books. One might call this book a small jewel, but in fact it's much bigger within than it looks from the outside., Lucid, evocative prose and dark fairy-tale motifs imbue the story with a dreamlike quality. ...this ghost-story-cum-coming-of-age-novel as readable as it is accomplished., This is an utterly captivating tale that is cleverly told through an entertaining cast of ghostly characters. There is plenty of darkness, but the novel's ultimate message is strong and life affirming..this is a rich story with broad appeal., "I wish my younger self could have had the opportunity to read and re-read this wonderful book, and my older self wishes that I had written it." (Garth Nix, author of The Abhorsen Trilogy), Lucid, evocative prose and dark fairy-tale motifs imbue the story with a dreamlike quality. …this ghost-story-cum-coming-of-age-novel as readable as it is accomplished., I wish my younger self could have had the opportunity to read and re-read this wonderful book, and my older self wishes that I had written it., After finishing The Graveyard Book, I had only one thought -- I hope there's more. I want to see more of the adventures of Nobody Owens, and there is no higher praise for a book., After finishing The Graveyard Book, I had only one thought — I hope there's more. I want to see more of the adventures of Nobody Owens, and there is no higher praise for a book., The Graveyard Book is everything everyone loves about Neil Gaiman, only multiplied many times over, a novel that showcases his effortless feel for narrative, his flawless instincts for suspense, and above all, his dark, almost silky sense of humor., THE GRAVEYARD BOOK, by turns exciting and witty, sinister and tender, shows Gaiman at the top of his form. In this novel of wonder, Neil Gaiman follows in the footsteps of long-ago storytellers, weaving a tale of unforgettable enchantment., This is, quite frankly, the best book Neil Gaiman has ever written. How he has managed to combine fascinating, friendly, frightening and fearsome in one fantasy I shall never know, but he has pulled it off magnificently - perfect for Halloween and any other time of the year., This is an utterly captivating tale that is cleverly told through an entertaining cast of ghostly characters. My favorite thing about this book was watching Bod grow up in his fine crumbly graveyard with his dead and living friends. The Graveyard Book is another surprising and terrific book from Neil Gaiman., Wistful, Witty, Wise--And Creepy. this Needs to Be Read by Anyone Who Is or Has Ever Been a Child., The Graveyard Book is endlessly inventive, masterfully told and, like Bod himself, too clever to fit into only one place. One of Gaiman's Best

This book is incredibly well-written, as are all of Gaiman's books. His editing, tone, vocabulary, and syntax are superb. This particularly book is clean of any offensive content, making it perfect for any age. The story is mature without being inappropriate and has that air of supernatural macabre for which Gaiman is known. The story teaches good lessons about love, friendship, family, and loyalty. I would recommend it for ages 8+.

  • Good Coming of Age Story with a Ghostly Twist

I bought The Graveyard Book because I am a fan of Neil Gaiman's work. Dispite that this book was written with a younger reader in mind, I think fans of Gaiman's other works will enjoy this book as well. He once again takes something ordinary (in this book it's a graveyard), and gives it a magic all it's own (Like the stars in Stardust). Upon the horrible death of his family, Nobody Owens (Bod to his friends) is taken into protction by the ghosts of the local graveyard who agree to raise him. Through the years they teach him school work, graveyard magics, right from wrong, compassion, friendship, and help him learn who he really is and who his family was. If you are a fan of Neil Gaiman's work or magical coming of age stories I would reccomend this book.

  • Injustice in The Graveyard Book

The main theme in The Graveyard Book seems to be the fight with the evil and doing justice, or maybe undoing injustice that this evil causes. It often refers to the biblical rule “eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth” but seems to treat it more deeply. There is also a clear distinction between good and evil characters, and a theme of revenge. Bod, as a positive character, at the very beginning, is set in opposition to the black and mysterious figure of Jack. This perfectly built beginning, quite scary and wonderfully introducing the mood, develops into a very intriguing and absorbing plot. The main theme of injustice is based on the story of the crime – a murder of the family. The Jacks-of-all-trades and their Order have, at least in their view, good reasons to kill Bod’s family. Yet, not ...

  • NEWBERRY MEDAL AWARD WINNING BOOK

The John Newberry Award was established in 1922 for excellence in Children's Literature. The American Library Association choose the winners and Honor Books by the end of Februrary every year. This book was no different than the other winners as it was an outstandingly written and charming tale of some adventrues a young lad endures while living in a graveyard. I do not want to give too much of the book away. Just know that it is a book you must read to believe and I believed in it very much. It reminded me of some adventures I had as a child and to me those memeories are priceless!!

  • Great book for teens and adults...wonderfully imaginative

The book was in great shape...the book is a great book. Its a childrens book (kinda) but the way Neil Gaiman writes is so engaging and descriptive, it could be read by adults and kids and both would appreciate it.
